Line Under proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hill side of other such obstruction. Sound travels
at the rate of about one fifth of a mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes two seconds for the
sound to travel to the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a sound and its reflection (the echo), you
can estimate the distance of an obstruction.
5 During World War II the British used a practical application of this principle to detect German planes on their
way to bomb London long before the enemy was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves,
since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds. The outnumbered Royal Air Force (RAF) always seemed to the
puzzled Germans to be lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than
anything else that won the Battle of Britain.
10 Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send the RAF planes and the
distance to send them (their range of fight, in other words), the device was called radio directing and ranging, and from
the initials the word radar was coined. (Problem Set Nurul Fikri)

Line Bees are flying insects that are found all over the world. There are over twelve thousand different species of
bees, but only about two thousand of these occur in North America.
Bees can be divided into two groups according to their living styles. Solitary bees live alone. On the other hand,
social bees, like ants, live in groups. Only about six hundred species are of this social category.
5 Social bees are interesting because in their ‘society’ there are different classes of bees. Each class
performs a different task. Queen bees lay eggs. Workers, underdeveloped females, work in the hive but never
reproduce. Males do not work; their only task is to mate with the queen.
Solitary bees occur as males and females. Every female makes a nest in the ground where she will lay
her eggs. The nest consists of many cells. After an egg is laid and put in a cell, the female also adds
10 some pollen and honey for food. Then she seals the cells. The females then go elsewhere to build a new nest or die.
When the eggs hatch, the larvae will feed on the pollen and honey which the female left for them.

But after decades of … (59) to pollution and harsh ocean air, time had taken its toll on Lady Liberty, as the statue is

elements. Funded by both the French and American governments, the renovation of the statue required enclosing it in a
scaffold while workers renovated the copper sheeting and replaced the glass torch with a gold one. The …(60) monument
was unveiled a few years later, as vibrant and inspiring as ever.
