Milling - Cutting Data: Nomenclature and Formula

This document provides formulas and definitions for calculating cutting parameters for milling operations, including: - Cutting speed (vc) is calculated based on RPM, number of teeth, and cutter diameter. - Feed speed (vf) and feed per revolution (f) can be calculated based on RPM, number of teeth, feed per tooth (fz), and the effective number of teeth (K). - Metal removal rate (Q) is calculated based on width of cut, depth of cut, feed speed, and working diameter. - Effective number of teeth (K) is sometimes less than the total number of teeth (z) for some cutters, and is used to calculate feed speed and feed

Feed speed
vf = n · z · fz (inch/min)

D = Cutter diameter
vf = n · K · fz (inch/min)
z = No of teeth
K = Effective No. of teeth for calculation of
feed speed or feed per rev (see below)
Feed per revolution vc = Surface footage/min.
f = z · fz (inch/rev) n = Rev./min. RPM
vf = Table travel (in./min.)
fz = Feed per tooth
f = K · fz (inch/rev) f = Feed per revolution
Q = Metal removal rate in. 3/min.
ae = Width of cut/radial depth of cut
Metal removal rate ap = Depth of cut/axial depth of cut
R = Cutter radius
Q = ae · ap · vf (inch3/min)

Effective No. of teeth (K)

The effective No. of teeth (K) is used to calculate the feed
speed (vf) and the feed per revolution (f). For most of the cut-
ters the effective No. of teeth (K) is equal to the No. of teeth in
the cutter (z), but for some of the cutters K is less than z.

Example: Disc mill 335.19

Total No. of teeth (z) = 12 Effective No. of teeth (K) = 6
Explanation: 6 inserts on one side of the cutter and 6 overlap-
ping inserts on the other side are used to get the full width (ap),
which means K = 6.
