The fire started shortly after nine in the morning when Mr. Sabri was about to leave the house to see a doctor. He believed most of his friends on the morning shift had already left for work. When he went to the kitchen, he saw the staircase engulfed in smoke and shouted to alert friends on the afternoon shift. However, he was almost overcome by fumes and had to save himself first, jumping out the window to escape. Fire engines put out the blaze within twenty minutes.
