Test Procedure For Sel 451relays

The document provides steps for testing the protection functions of a SEL-451 capacitor bank protection relay, including: 1) Communicating with the relay and reading/changing settings using AcSELerator Quickset software. 2) Taking metering readings and testing overcurrent pickup and timing. 3) Retrieving event reports from the relay. 4) Testing phase and ground fault overcurrent elements, including pickup values and time curves. 5) Conducting a characteristic curve test to verify the relay's low-set protection curve criteria.

 COMMUNICATION WITH THE RELAY
U

Go to All programs click on “AcSELerator Quickset”

The below window will appear, and then click on “communications parameters”.

-3-
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
Select the setting as follows:
 Active Connection Type : serial,
 Device : COM? : USB serial port,
 Data speed : Auto detect,
And other all settings leave it as per default setting. Then click “Apply” and “ok”.

 TO RECEIVE OR READ SETTING FROM THE RELAY

Click on “read” to read setting file from the relay.

-4-
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
Then click “ok”

-5-
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
The file will be transfer to our Laptop.

Then click on “Open settings in a new editor”

-6-
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
After that this setting file will be appear

 TO CHANGE THE SETTING AND SEND TO THE RELAY

U

We can change any parameter setting as we need. Go to ‘General Global Settings’ change
‘NFREQ nominal Frequency’ 60Hz.

-7-
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
Selected the ‘Line Configuration’ then CT & PT ratio change in relay as per scheme.

We can send this file after all changes in setting. Click “send activate settings” on toolbar

-8-
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
Select box by putting tick (√) automatically available to whatever changes we have done
and Click “ok”.

All changes setting are transfer to the relay.

-9-
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
After transfer all changes in setting files the below screen will appear.

 TO SAVE OUR SETTING FILE

U

Go to “file” and click “save” or “save as”

- 10 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
Create name of setting as we need. Then click “ok”. Once we save setting we can open
the file in offline condition also.

 TO TAKE METERING
U

Then inject from FREJA three phases or single phase current to take the reading
from “Terminal Screen”. Click ‘Terminal’ and type ACC for level-1 and password
(OTTER) also. Then type ‘MET’ for metering.
Level-1 user name : ACC
Level-1 password : OTTER
Level-2 User name : 2AC
Level-2 password : TAIL
Warning : password must be in capital letters

- 11 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
For the Definite Time over-current test. Click ‘Phase Instantaneous / Definite-Time Over-
current’ screen will appear like this.
For pickup test, set IP (50P1P)>= 0.5A and time (67P1D) =0 in Relay.

 TO TEST OVER CURRENT PICKUP AND TIMING

 Then go to the FREJA 2nd page and make it VOLTAGE & CURRENT zero,
FREQUENCY must set to60Hz.
 Now press start in FREJA. Increase the R phase current. When current will reach
our setting value trip will come. Automatically FREJA will be stopped by FREJA
Binary input. Do the same test for other two phases.
 For timing test, Set in Relay 67P1D=180 Cycles (t=3 sec). Inject more than
pickup value or two time of pickup value; trip will come as per our time setting
value.

We can assign more than one trip function in one contact that time we will use ‘trip logic’

- 12 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
We take separate trip, so we can assign as per the protection testing.
Here we can assign the Binary output as per protection.
In the screen ‘output104’ is taken as definite Time Over-current.

- 13 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
*Note in SEL Relay ‘output 101’ and some other outputs polarity is available (+/-).
So we take FREJA binary input as per polarity.

 TO GET EVENTS FROM THE RELAY

Go to “Tools” and “Events” and “Get Event files”

- 14 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
This screen will appear and select the event you want to save

Then we click “Get selected Events”

- 15 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
The below screen will appear

You can select the place you want to save and create name and click “save”

- 16 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
After finishing save this screen will appear and click “save”

Click “close” once the below dialog box appears

- 17 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
We can see this event in “Tools”, “Events” and “View Event Files”

Then choose the event (before we saved that event file) click “open”

- 18 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
After that we can see all events “Graph, phasors, event report text, settings, .etc”

- 19 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
For example: settings

The below screen will appear

- 20 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
 TO TEST PHASE HIGHSET ELEMENT TEST
If Highset phase element is not enabled go to “Relay Configuration” then change
‘2’ in “E50P Phase Instantaneous/Definte-Time Overcurrent Elements”

For setting we set “Phase Instantaneous Over current 2” as we need. For pickup test time
cycle is zero. We can do same test procedure for low set and High set (pickup test and
timing test).

- 21 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
 TO TEST GROUND FAULT HIGHSET AND LOWSET ELEMENT
U

TEST

If Highset Ground element not enable first go to “Relay Configuration” then

change ‘2’ in “E50G Ground Instantaneous/Definte-Time Overcurrent Elements”

We can set value in ‘Residual Ground Instantaneous /definite Time Over current’ as per
our test sheet.

- 22 -
Prepared by: Engr. M.Ramsankar
For ‘Output101’ contact for Low elements (Ground fault). We can do same test
procedure for low set and High set (pickup test and timing test).

Output contact for High elements. (Ground fault)

 CHARACTERISTIC CURVE TEST
Low set Curve Criteria test, Click “Time Over current” and select ‘C1’ in “51S1C” TAB.

For Neutral test select “3IOL” in ‘51S1O’ TAB.
