CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES

ROBOTICS
INTRODUCTORY

General Information:
 The Introductory Robotics class consists of three modules. You will have a theory
and practical component for each course.
 The practical portion must be completed in the school shop.
 Completing the theory portion of the modules:
 The theory portion will be completed independently by the students. You
may work collaboratively on these, but each must submit their own copy
to their own dropbox.
 These assignments will be assigned, either as a whole or in portions as
we work through the project. Due dates will be given a minimum of one
week prior to the due date.
 The assignments are located in Brightspace and are to be submitted
through the appropriate “Dropbox” in Brightspace. Your teacher will show
you where these are located. Submitting assignments: If you complete
an assignment for ELT1010 Electro-Assembly 1, the assignment is
submitted in the “Dropbox” in that module. Likewise for the other modules
you will complete.
 If you have down time in the lab, start working on the next assignment to
make efficient use of time.
 All course outlines, notes, and assignments will be posted in the main
Brightspace Robotics Technology page and accessed by clicking on the
“Content” tab in “Resources”. KEEP CHECKING YOUR BRIGHTSPACE
(D2L) for updates!!
 You have to wear safety glasses when you are working on the following aspects
of the project: developing, etching, drilling, parts placement, soldering, and metal
forming.
 You will need a pencil for every class.
 Footwear for working in the Robotics Lab is closed toe shoes and low heels as
this is an industrial lab setting where we will be dealing with heavy equipment,
sharp edged metal, and corrosive chemicals.
 You are responsible for finding out what you have missed. If you miss a test or
assignment that was due, you are responsible for getting these completed.
 Due dates will be set for projects and must be followed. If you will not be done on
time, arrange with the instructor to come in during extra lab time to get your
project completed on time.
 The lab will be open most days by 8 AM and for 1 hour after school. Let your
teacher know when you would like to use the shop during these extra times.
 You will have to pass the Safety Quiz with at least 80% in order to work in the
lab. You will also be required to return the signed Shop Safety Contract before
working in the lab.
You cannot use any equipment in the Robotics Lab until you have received the
demonstration on it and have been checked out on it (instructor present while you
demonstrate safe use of it).

COURSE OUTLINE:
ELT1010: Electro-Assembly 1
Students apply basic fabricating and servicing techniques to construct and test
electronic and electromagnetic devices and cables. Students will develop circuit
construction skills.

ELT1130: Robotics 1
Students apply the fundamentals of robotic systems and basic robotic functions.
A robot chassis will be fabricated as the platform for the robot.

ELT1130: Robotics Applications

Students apply the fundamentals of robotics systems and basic robotic functions.
Students will program the PicAxe microcontroller on their assembled circuit
board.

Use of the 3-D Printers:

If you have progressed at a suitable pace, the teacher will allow you to use the 3-D
printers to fabricate parts for you robot. In order to print parts, they must be approved by
the teacher and designed in Tinkercad (it’s the handiest). There is a limit to the amount
of 3-D printing each student can undertake. Getting time on the 3-D printer will be a
challenge if a lot of people need to print at the same time.

COURSE EVALUATION:
Your final mark will actually be reported as the individual mark for each module.

NOTE: You will have to complete ELT1010 to get credits for any other module.

ELT1010: Electro-Assembly 1 Assignment 10%

Electrical Safety Quiz 5%
Circuit Fundamentals Quiz 5%
Cable Quiz 5%
Circuit Prototyping Quiz 5%
Circuit Construction Project 45%
Electromagnetics Quiz 5%
Component Test 10%
Lab Bench Mark 10%

ELT1130: Robot Timeline Assignment 10%

Robot Anatomy Assignment 10%
Robot Chassis Construction 70%
Lab Bench Mark 10%

ELT1140: Robotics Applications Assignment 10%

Flowchart 20%
Microcontroller Programming 30%
Robot Commissioning 30%
Lab Bench Mark 10%

NOTE: All assessment items for project construction are listed here as a composite
mark, but all competencies being evaluated will appear separately on the marking rubric
for each project.

MAJOR PROJECT:
The main project to be constructed is an Arduino Nano SumoBot. Components of the
robot fabrication will be used for the practical marks for the three modules. Your circuit
board construction (parts placement, soldering, etc) will be marked for ELT1010. The
adaptation/fabrication/integration of the robot chassis and motor/gearbox will be the
basis for ELT1130, and the programming and commissioning of the robot will be used for
evaluation for ELT1140.
There will be an Arduino Nano SumoBot tournament to find the champion for the class.
Arduino Nano SumoBot trials and tweaking will be permitted in the preliminary rounds.
The robot must be handed in for marking. The robots will have to conform to Arduino
Nano SumoBot specifications.

The fine print:

REASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN ROBOTICS 10 CAN OCCUR.
Students are encouraged to do their best to prepare themselves to appropriately respond to the assessment
of course outcomes following the schedule as detailed in each course outline. Providing students an
opportunity for improvement, departments may provide a chance for students to reassess an assessment or
a part thereof.

Before a reassessment is granted to a student, corrective action will be required so that the student can gain
a more thorough understanding of the content and/or improve upon a skill/concept. This can be achieved by
one or more of the following: developing a learning plan, corrective instruction, relearning concepts, practice,
change in learning strategy (Including attendance), and participating in tutorials. Departments may add
further criteria for the student to accomplish to ensure curricular understanding prior to the student
completing a reassessment.
