Chapter III

The study will be conducted at the University of the Eastern Philippines, specifically at the College of Business Administration. It will use a descriptive-correlational research method to determine the relationship between socio-demographic factors and variables affecting the choice of strand among 103 senior high school students in the ABM program. Data will be collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using statistical tests such as frequency count, mean, percentage, ranking, and chi-square to identify significant relationships.

METHODOLOGY

Locale of the Study

The University of the Eastern Philippines (UEP) is

located approximately 3.5 km. east of the town of Catarman.

UEP has 3 campuses - UEP Main (owns 4,500 hectares of land

in Catarman), Laoang, and Catubig. UEP runs extension

programs throughout Samar and caters to about

30,000students.

The research study will be conduct in UEP Main which

consists of the following colleges and departments: UEP

Primary and Secondary Laboratory Schools, College of

Agriculture, College of Arts and Communication, College of

Business Administration, College of Education, College of

Engineering, College of Law, College of Nursing, College of

Science, College of Veterinary Medicine, and Graduate

School.

At the College of Business Administration is the

specific place where the research study will be conduct for

the researcher’s advantage and benefits, because the

researchers are studying in that department.

Research Design

This study used a descriptive-correlational method of

research used to determine the socio-demographic

characteristics such as age, sex, parent’s occupation and

monthly income, and the variates affecting the choice of

strand of ABM senior high school students of UEP of the

first semester year 2017.

It would also see if independent variables relating to

the variates such as reasons, plan of ABM SHS students

after graduation, the advantages and benefits of students

were significant and affecting the choice of strand of ABM

senior high school students.

This Descriptive-correlational research would use

quantitative methods to assess the feedback from the

respondents. The research design follows an Independent to

dependent relationship framework.

Research Variables

This study has two variables the Independent portion

includes the socio-demographic profile of the students, the

variates; their reasons, plan of ABM SHS students after

graduation, the advantages and benefits that affect the

choice of strand of the students. And at the end, the

26

Dependent portion is the senior high school student’s chose

the ABM strand.

Population and Sampling

The respondents of this study are grade 11 and 12 ABM

senior high school students of the University of the

Eastern Philippines. The whole gradae-11 is only has one

section with 42 students and the grade 12 students divided

into three (3) sections, the section A with the 31 students,

section B 41 students and section C 28 students. So the

total populations of the ABM strand of the said school are

139 senior high school students. To identify the

populations (sample size) that needed for the research, the

researchers used the Sloven’s Formula.

𝑵
𝒏 =

n = sample size

N = population

e2 = margin of error at .05 squared.

Respondents of the Study

The research populations (respondents) in this study are

total of 139 students from ABM students in UEP College of

27

Business Administration; Academic Year 2017 first semester

from the total population of 139 students, the study will

have 103 respondents turnout by the used of Sloven’s

Formula.

The researchers used stratified random sampling, it is

used to select randomly and unbiased sampling. Samples from

different strata or sections of population, this type of

sampling is used to divides a population into subgroups or

strata, and random samples are taken, in proportion to the

population, from each of the strata created. The members in

each of the stratum formed have similar attributes and

characteristics.

Research Instruments

The instrument used was adapted questionnaire, a

checklist and a Likert scale was used to gather data. Table

2 and 3 of the questionnaire is a checklist in which the

respondents are going to check their chosen answer. Table 4

and 5 shows a Likert scale with 9-items.

Part I of the questionnaire covers the socio-demographic

profile of the respondent; such as name, sex, and monthly

income of the parents.

28

Part II Variates contains the Reasons of SHS students in

choosing ABM strand, the plan of the student after

graduating Senior High School, the advantages of ABM strand,

the benefits of ABM Strand.

Scoring and Interpretation of Data

The scoring and interpretation of the data is base on the

following:

Scale Interpretation

5 Strongly agree

4 Agree

3 Neither

2 Disagree

1 Strongly disagree

Validation of Research Instrument

The questionnaire was adopted from other research study

that related to this research study.

Data Gathering Procedure

We gave a permission letter to the Dean of College of

Business Administration for the approval of allowing us to

29

distribute our questionnaires to ABM Senior High School

Students. Then after getting the approval we distributed

the questionnaires to our respondents the ABM Senior High

School. We also make sure that we will conduct the research

to the time of the vacant of the students to avoid

distraction of class discussions, and to give the

respondents enough time to answer the questionnaire. After

the data gathering we proceed now to tallying the answers

and to apply the statistical treatment.

Statistical Treatment

Respondents or senior high school students were

statistically analyzed with the data requirements of the

study. Students were statistically analyzed with the data

instruments of the research. Discriptive-Correlational

statistics such as frequency count, mean, and percent,

ranking are considered. The used of statistical treatment

to get the significance relationship or the research we

used the Chi-square.

Frequency Count- used to tabulate the data such as the

profile and the variates.

Ranking- used to for the descriptive measures to compare

the positional importance of the variables.

30

Chi-square- used to determine the significant relationship

between the independent variables and the dependent

variables.
