RoadKill Toys
Roadkill Toys is an alternative designer toy brand that was set up in the UK back in
2005 although be warned these are not the kind of toys that you want to be giving to
your children, if its something cute and cuddly that you are after then RoadKill toys
are definitely not for you.
These toys have been designed for the people out there who have a sense of humor
and are not easily offended, the reason for this.. all of these toys have a macabre twist
to them (for those of you unsure of what macabre means it’s basically toys that
represent the grimmer aspect of death, toys which have a gory, gruesome side to
them) although at Roadkill Toys they prefer to refer to this as squash plush, a perfect
fitting as each of their original toy characters from the collection have all literally
been run over and squashed.
What’s nice and refreshing to see here is that the creator Adam Arber and his fellow
creators Charlie Bradshaw and Mike Velcro have not been afraid to go against the
norm, they haven’t been afraid to push the boundaries when designing this squash
plush range and they openly accept that these toys are not going to appeal to
everyone, they realise that its highly likely that they are going to upset and offend
some people who are out there, but these toys haven’t been designed for those
people. I think what people need to remember is not to take these toys too seriously,
they have been designed as a bit of fun and even though they have a macabre theme
there is actually something quite bizarrely cute about each of these RoadKill Toy
characters.
Now you may be wondering just how someone comes up with the concept of Roadkill
for a Plush toy range? Well you may be surprised to learn that the Rodkill Toy
concept came from the look of the dog belonging to Adam Arbers mother in law and
some doodles of splattered furry animals which were based upon photographs that
were taken by these young creators in their misspent youth, believe it or not all three
of these guys share a macabre sense of humor and use to go around photographing
actual roadkill. It was the bringing together of these ideas and a dream to create their
own toy range that saw the creation of this RoadKill Toys Squash Plush range..
You will find that there are currently four characters within the Roadkill Toy family,
each one follows the same macabre theme all having been run over but they are all
individual and unique in their design and the story of their own demise..
Twitch the raccoon was the first member of the Roadkill family . Twitch came to a
tragic end after a head on collision with a Ford Mondeo...
He was then joined by Grind the rabbit who was flattened by a Scandia Juggernaut
and Splodge the hedgehog was just no match for Jensen Button's fast paced Honda
on the Silverstone race track.
Squash Plush
Each of the toys use a material that gives these characters a ragged fur like quality, a
realistic mangy fur look, the bodies themselves contain a combination of stuffing
which helps to give them that realistic squidgy feel and beads that helps to give the
toys a little bit of added weight which really helps to weigh them down and make it
look like the toys are realistically splayed out or should that be squashed!
To the side of each of the toys you will find that there are two zips, once undone this
allows you to disembowel these poor little animals removing the blood and their
internal organs making them look like a true piece of RoadKill. This internal blood
and guts is made using a high tech stretchy material, it gives a more realistic feel to
these internal organs which allows them to moves and bulges under your fingers
giving it a realistic squidgy feel.
Something which I find quiet quirky about this Squash Plush range is the fact that
each of the toys come in their very own little translucent zip up plastic body bag.
Each toy fits snugly into the bags and the fact that its translucent means that you can
see the carnage inside before you even open it, each of the toys also come with their
very own personalised toe tag with details of death and a certified death certificate
that has been signed by a doctor.
The latest character to join the Roadkill toy family was Pop the Weasel, he met his
end after being hit by a sky-blue Robin Reliant, now unlike his predecessors Pop is
not a squash plush, in fact the designers at Roadkill Toys have gone for something
completely different and created a RoadKill inspired door wedge.
The Pop the weasel door wedge is made from a toughened rubber which is suitable to
withstand a lifetime of door stopping, the rubber has a sticky nature too it which
helps to give it friction so when he is placed on the floor and the door is pushed back
onto it the door wedge will not slip, so whether you be using it on a carpet, lino,
laminate, shag pile carpet or wood floor the little weasel will ensure to give a firm
grip.
Another thing great about this product is that compared to the other characters in
the RoadKill Toy collection instead of coming in a body bag Pop comes in his own
made to measure coffin.
The coffin is made from re in forced card which has been printed with a pine wood
effect which really does help to make it look that more realistic as does the plaque on
top commemorating this poor weasels life. When you take a look Inside and you will
find Pops lifeless body just laying there waiting to be exhumed by you. He also comes
with his own personalised toe tag with details of his death and a certified death
certificate which has been signed by a doctor.
I think what people really need to remember is not to take these toys too seriously,
they have been designed as a bit of fun and even though they have a macabre twist to
them once you get over the initial roadkill, death aspect you discover that there is
actually something quite bizarrely cute about each of these RoadKill Toy characters
which I’m sure anyone with a sense of humour will appreciate.
