or The National Blood Services Act of 1994 and can discuss what impact the regulations have within their clinical area. 2. Has read and understand the Blood Transfusion Policy on the collection of samples, prescriptions, collection and transfusion of blood and blood products.
3. Can demonstrate their knowledge and skills in
relation to correct labeling of venous samples for transfusion 4. Has an understanding of red blood cell group compatibility and Rh-D antibody and the importance of the compatibility of blood products 5. Has understand and can discuss the implications regarding the temperature control of blood products, the distribution processes and storage facilities. Demonstrate the processes involved in safely collecting red blood cells from the blood bank fridges and how to take appropriate action if there is not an exact match between the patient details and the blood products and documentation:
1. Locate the unit of red cells to be used first in the
blood fridge.
2. Check all the details against the collection
slip/transfusion care pathway, the blood component compatibility label and the blood bank outside sourced receiving logbook. 3. Can spot the discrepancies, if an exact match is not confirmed then the blood must not be taken and the laboratory or MTOD must be informed immediately. A new sample with correct patient details must be sent to the laboratory.
4. Awareness of the procedures put in place to safely
return red blood cells to the blood bank fridge and the legal implications involved in this process. 5. Can demonstrate the process involved in the checking of patient’s details.
6. Routinely checks the unit donation number and
donor’s blood group on the front of blood/product match the donor details on compatibility label on reverse of blood/product when performing a cross match.
7. Routinely inspect the blood or blood product bag for
any signs of: leakage, clotting, hemolysis or unusual color. Check expiry date on blood/product. Before crossmatching and after releasing the blood to the MTOD.
8. Can perform accurately the Gel Tech Method, Tube
Method and Type specific/Tube Method (for Fresh Frozen Plasma and Platelet Con.) 9. Can relay appropriately the availability of blood units of a patient to the Nurse on Duty
