0. Aim of the calculation note

The aim of this calculation note is to estimated the electrical requirement for heat tracing at the discharge of gas lift scrubber

1. System description

Gas lift scrubber recovers condensated liquids and slug from gas lift pipeline.
Liquid in the gas lift scrubber are sent to production manifold by pressure difference (gas lift scrubber is at 85 barg and production manifold is at 22 barg).
The liquid are sent to production manifold with an on/off control. When liquid level in gas lift scrubber reach the LCH1 (level control high #1), on/off valve opens.
When liquid are flashed accross the control valve the temperature decreases below the hydrate formation point. To avoid plugging of the line, heat tracing is installed to keep
temperature above the hydrate point.

Note that, durring pigging operation, large amount of liquid (slug) are expect (inlet flow of gas lift scrubber 100% liquid).
During this operation, the normal control valve will not be sufficient to transfer all the liquid to production manifold.
A by-pass control valve is install to allow emptying of the gas lift scrubber during pigging operation.
This automatic control valve will be open when liquid level in gas lift scrubber reachs LCH2 (LCH2>LCH1)
For pigging operation, methanol injection (with portable methanol injection skid) will be use to avoid hydrate formation. Electrical heat tracing is not design for this case.

2. Basis of design

The design case for electrical heat tracing sizing is the case where the liquid flowrate at the gas lift pipeline outlet is the highest.
This case occurs with highest gas lift flowrate, lowest arrival temperature and highest gas lift molecuar weigth.
This case is describe in heat and material balance (NG-018-D3-NGD-408100) as case 5

Following basis are given in Process design basis (NG-018-D5-NGD-408001):

Gas lift scrubber operating pressure 85 barg

Gas lift scrubber minimum operating temperature 19°C
Production manifold operating pressure 22 barg

3. Calculation

Hydrate formation temperature:

Hydrate formation temperature is calculated with HYSYS utility "Hydrate Formation utility"
At 22 barg, with the gas lift scrubber outlet composition, hydrate will form at -0.5°C.
Electrical heat tracing is design to maintain temperature 5°C above the hydrate formation temperature, ie 4.5°C.

Fluid propeties:

Fluid propeties are summurized bellow

pressure : 22 barg
temperature : -10.3°C (without heat tracing)

pressure : 85 barg heat tracing is thus design to heat the fluid from
temperature : 19°C -10.3°C to 4.5°C.

Flowrate : 2747 kg/hr
