Inquiries, Investigation and Immersion
I. Introduction
Both professional researchers and successful student researchers
develop research questions. That’s because research questions are
more than handy tools, they are essential to the research process.
By defining exactly what the researcher is trying to find out, these
questions influence most of the rest of the steps taken to conduct
the research. That’s true even if the research is not for academic
purposes but for other areas of our lives. Interest in a particular
topic usually begins the research process, but it is the familiarity
with the subject that helps define an appropriate research question
for a study. The purpose of researchable questions is to answer a
specific concern or issue.
II. Body of the Report
A researchable research question is one that can generate a
hypothesis that can be tested through a structured and rigorous
process of data collection, analysis and testing, either quantitatively,
or qualitatively, or a hybrid of methods. A research question is a
question that your research study/project sets out to answer. Often
you have not only one but a set of between at least 7 related
questions that you want to answer. These questions are important
since they are the focus of your research; answering your questions
is THE main aim of your study or thesis and “everything else follows
from them”. Thus, the research questions must be accurately and

III. Conclusion
The development of the research question is the most important
aspect of a research project. A research project can fail if the
objectives and hypothesis are poorly focused and underdeveloped.
Designing and developing an appropriate and relevant research
question, hypothesis and objectives can be a difficult task. The
critical appraisal of the research question used in a study is vital to
the application of the findings to clinical practice. Focusing
resources, time and dedication to these is very important tasks will
help to guide a successful research project, influence interpretation
of the results and affect future publication efforts. Ensure that the
researchable question is answerable by feasible and clinically
relevant. In doing and developing researchable research questions
use the FINER criteria in the development of the researchable
research questions. Be specific and relevant in making
researchable questions.
