Historically the tournament was played in various Australian states but in 1972 it was decided to keep it in the city that attracted the greatest attendance, which was Melbourne at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. Since then the event has grown in stature and popularity internationally. New facilities were built at Flinders Park when the existing ones were deemed inadequate for a Grand Slam event. The move to Flinders Park was an immediate success with attendance increasing 80% from the previous year at Kooyong. The venue name later changed to Melbourne Park in 1996.
