Problem Set 6
Problem Set 6
Phys 7240
Due: Dec 4
Here r1 and r2 in the notation hr1 r2 i label the neighboring sites of the lattice, and dN −1 sr
√ all the N − 1 angles specifying the direction of the spin ~sr (whose
implies integration over
length is fixed to be N ). Find the correlation length ξ of this model in the limit N → ∞,
as a function of K.
Hint: To solve this problem, take advantage of the following representation:
Z Y P
K ~s ·~s
sr 2 − N ) e
Y
hr1 r2 i r1 r2
Z = dsr,α δ(~ =

Z "Y #" # PN h P i

r r r,α r,α hr1 r2
s s
i r1 ,α r2 ,α
−iN r
λr
= dsr,α e (1.3)
r 2π r,α
Here the integrals over sr,α for each r and α goes from −∞ to +∞. Then integrate over
all s (this is a Gaussian integral) and construct the saddle point approximation for the
integrals over λr . Do not go to the continuum limit except at the very end, when estimating
integrals: this problem is easiest to work out directly on the lattice.
2 Clock model
J. Cardy, problem 6.2
Suppose that the angular degree of freedom of the XY model is allowed to take only
those values which are multiplies of 2π/p, for some integer p. This is called the p-state clock
model. Let us work in 2 dimensional space. Modify the duality transformation of Section
6.3 of J. Cardy’s book to this case and show that the dual model is also a p-state clock
model with a different interaction. Consider in particular the case p = 2 and show that
this reduces to the Ising model with a suitable change of variables. Deduce that the Ising
model on a square lattice is self-dual and find its critical coupling (critical temperature).
Hint: Take advantage of the following representation, valid for integer n:
p−1

) = X e−J(m)+ 2πimn 1 p−1
X K cos 2πn − 2πinm
eK cos( p p , e−J(m) = e ( p ) p . (2.4)
