UNIT OPS (SUPPLEMENTARY PROBLEM)

1. (Foust 6-7) A flow of 100 lb. moles/hr. of a vapor containing 0.40 mole fractions NH3 and 0.6
mole fraction H 0 is to be enriched in ammonia in a distillation tower which consists of an
enriching section and a total condenser. The feed into the bottom of the column is a saturated
vapor (at its dew point) at 100 psia, the operating pressure. The distillate is withdrawn from a
total condenser and has a composition of 0.90 mole fraction NH3. Part of the liquid condensed in
the total condenser is withdrawn as the distillate product and is returned to the column as
withdrawn as the distillate product and is returned to the column as reflux. 85% of the ammonia
charged must be recovered in the distillate.
(a) Calculate the number of equilibrium stages required and the reflux ratio (LO/D)
(b) What is the condenser duty (heat removed per hour from the condenser)?

2. (Foust 6-8) A liquid ethanol-water feed is to be stripped of ethanol in a distillation column

consisting of a stripped section and a reboiler. The liquid will be fed to the top plate and vapor
reflux will be furnished by a reboiler which takes liquid from the bottom plate and totally
vaporizes it. The bottoms product is also withdrawn from the bottom plate.
(a) Calculate the number of equilibrium stages required for the following conditions:
Feed: 100 lb moles/hr, 0.2 mole fraction ethanol, 0.8 mole fraction water at 100 OF and 1
atm.
Vapor Product: 0.5 mole fraction ethanol
Bottom Product: 0.03 mole fraction ethanol
(b) What is the reboiler duty (Btu/hr added at reboiler)

3. (Foust 6-10) 100 lb. moles/hr of an aqueous solution containing 20 mole % ethanol is to be
fractionated at 1 atm. to produce a distillate of 80 mole % ethanol and a bottoms of 2 mole %
ethanol. The total condenser has a duty of 1,000, 000 Btu/hr. The bottoms are withdrawn from
the plate. The feed is a liquid at 140 OF.
(a) How many equilibrium stages are required?
(b) What is the reboiler duty?

4. (Foust 7-13) An aqueous solution containing 20 mole % ethanol is to be fractionated at 1 atm.

into a distillate of composition 80 mole % ethanol and a waste of composition 3 mole % ethanol.
The feed is at 60 OF. A distillation column equivalent to seven theoretical plates is available.
What reflux ratio (L1/D) should be use?
5. (Foust 8-3) A vapor mixture of 40 mole % hexane and 60 mole % heptane is slowly condensed at
1 atm. and the equilibrium liquid is withdrawn as is formed. (a) What is the composition of the
vapor after 50 mole % of it has condensed? (b) If all the liquid were allowed to remain in contact
with the vapor what would be the composition of the vapor after 50 mole % had condensed?

LIQUID EXTRACTION

1. An aqueous solution of acetic acid is to be extracted with isopropyl ether. The solution contains
24.6 lb. of acetic acid and 80 lb. of water. If 100 lb. of isopropyl ether is added to the solution,
what weight of acetic acid will be extracted by the isopropyl ether if equilibrium conditions are
attained? Water and isopropyl ether may be considered as completely immiscible under these
conditions. At the temperature of the extraction, the following equilibrium data apply:

Lb. acetic acid

Y Lb. isopropyl 0.030 0.046 0.063 0.070 0.078 0.086 0.0106
ether

Lb. acetic acid

Y Lb. water 0.10 0.15 0.20 0.22 0.24 0.26 0.30

2. A liquid mixture of acetaldehyde and toluene contains 8 lb. of acetaldehyde and 90 lb. of
toluene. Part of the acetaldehyde in this solution is to be extracted using pure water as the
extracting agent. The extraction is to be performed in two stages, using 25 lb. of fresh water for
each stage. The raffinate layer from the first stage is treated by the fresh water in the second
stage. The extraction takes place at 17 deg. C and the equilibrium equation Y=2.2X may be
employed. Assuming toluene and water as immiscible, what would be the weight percent of
acetaldehyde in a mixture of the extracts from the both stages if each of the extractions were
theoretically perfect?
