Tutorial 6: Two-Phase Flow in An Elbow ME393: Engineering Software Laboratory

This document contains instructions for two fluid dynamics simulation problems in ANSYS Fluent. The first problem involves simulating heat transfer in a parallel plate heat exchanger with varying inlet flow rates. The second problem involves simulating flow over a backward facing step at different Reynolds numbers and analyzing the velocity, streamlines, reattachment length, and velocity profiles.

Tutorial 6: Two-phase flow in an elbow

ME393: Engineering Software Laboratory

Q.1 Solve the parallel flow heat exchanger problem using ANSYS Fluent. Create the geometry as
shown in Fig. Dimensions are Dh = 25 mm, Dc = 5 mm and length of the heat exchanger is 0.4 metre.
The diameter of cold water inlet-outlet section is 10 mm and height is 15 mm. (A) Determine the
overall heat transfer coefficient for two cases (i) Hot water flow rate is 50 kg/s and cold water flow
rate is 40 kg/s (ii) Hot water flow rate is 40 kg/s and cold water flow rate is 50 kg/s. (B) Show the plot
of hot and cold water temperature versus length of the heat exchanger for cases (i) and (ii). (use
Th1= 80oC, Tc1= 20oC).

Q.2 Consider a 2D flow over backward step flow as shown in the Fig. Solve the problem using ANSYS
Fluent for Re = 1000, 2000 and 5000. Present the velocity vector and streamline plots for all
Reynolds number. Show the re-attachment lengths for all the cases. Plot the u-velocity profile at the
distance 0f 0.2m, 0.4m, 0.6m and 1m for all the three cases.
