LEARNING OBJECTIVES

M At the end of the lesson, most pupils will be able to make and use their own sock puppets while reciting the chant.

C At the end of the lesson, most pupils will be able to listen and follow classroom instructions with support.

1. Play a mime game to review imperative verbs from the textbook. Say the words and the
I. PRE-LESSON pupils mime.
e.g Take out your pencil, please. Put away your book, please.
1. Introduce your puppet.
2. Get your puppet to ask some pupils their names and review.
e.g. Hello, what’s your name? or How are you?
3. Display a chant chart on the board.
4. Tell pupils you will say a chant and that they should listen and watch.
5. Make sure you have a book in your hand before you start the chant.
6. Say the first verse of the chant.
7. When you reach the last line of the verse, the line which includes the word please, open
your book, ask pupils why you opened your book after that last line.
II. LESSON DEVELOPMENT
8. Elicit that this is because please is polite (pupils will probably need to use L1 here).
9. Explain that you’ll continue with other verses, and that pupils should only do an action
after they hear the word please
10. Say more verses and make sure that pupils do the actions when you say please.
11. You could vary the speed and/or volume of your voice.
12. Ask pupils to make their own sock puppets.
13. Monitor and help as and when necessary.
14. Ask pupils to work in small groups and take it in turns to be the teacher who says the
chant using their puppet,
1. Write verbs on the board (e.g. open).
III. POST LESSON 2. Pupils read the words and put them into as many imperative statements as possible
(e.g. open your book/ the window/the door).
