QUESTION 1 [35 MARKS]

A kerosene stream of 250 kg/h containing 0.08 wt% nicotine is used to extract nicotine in water
in a countercurrent multistage tower. The inlet water containing 1.3 wt% nicotine in water enters
at 145 kg/hr. The water and kerosene are essentially immiscible in each other. It is desired that
only 0.15 wt% nicotine remains in the exit water stream. Calculate the minimum solvent rate
required. Using 1.3 times the minimum rate, determine the number of theoretical stages using
graphical and analytical equation. The equilibrium data are given in Table 1.

QUESTION 2 [30 MARKS]

Oil is to be extracted from halibut livers in a countercurrent extraction tank using ether as
solvent. The entrainment of solution by the granulated liver mass was obtained from experiments
and the data is presented in Table 2. In the extraction tank, the charge is 100 pound of halibut
livers, based on completely exhausted livers. The non-extracted livers contain 0.05 gallon of oil
per pound of exhausted livers. For this system, an oil-free ether is used as solvent and 92%
recovery of oil is desired from the process. The final extract is to contain 0.65 gallon of oil per
gallon of extract. Determine the number of stages and calculate the amounts and concentrations
of inlet solvent stream and all streams leaving the process.

QUESTION 3 [35 MARKS]

Sugar solution needs to be concentrated to 55 wt.% in order to produce sugar crystal. Double
effect evaporator with reverse feed configuration was used for this purpose. 5000 kg/h of 15 wt%
sugar feed solution enters the second evaporator at 30°C. The absolute pressure in the second
evaporator is 12.35 kPa. Saturated steam at 313 kPa enters the first evaporator and the vapor
from this evaporator is used to heat the second evaporator. The overall coefficients are U i = 2500
and U2 1800 W/m 2 .K. Given the heating areas for both evaporators are equal. The boiling point
rise of the solution can be estimated from BPR (°C) 1.78 x + 6.22 x 2 . And the heat capacity of
the liquid solution is c (kJ/kg.K) = 4.19 -2.35 x. Determine the steam consumption in kg/hr.
(Note: The difference between the assumed and calculated values less than 15% is acceptable).
