Embracing, Enhancing & Elevating Neurologic Care

in a Cost Constrained Environment

Intended for physicians, advanced practice providers, allied health professionals and practice
administrators directly involved in managing the cost of care for patients with neurologic disorders.

Saturday, October 20, 2018, 7am-2pm

Buffalo Marriott HarborCenter
Introduction
One third of Americans suffer from a neurologic disorder, with costs approaching one trillion dollars.
Left unchecked, the prevalence and impact on the United States economy will continue to grow as the
elderly population is expected to double by 2050. Opportunities to bend these devastating costs and
prevalent trends, include: (1) Advances in precision medicine, which couple new disease modifying drugs
with diagnostic advances; (2) Improved care coordination focused on reducing chronic disease costs tied
to avoidable hospital expenses and inefficient utilization of expensive services; (3) Early access to proper
diagnostics and treatments that can preempt development of more extensive disease; (4) Community
investment in the awareness of lifestyle risk factors, and support for addressing psycho-social-economic
issues that interfere with proper healthcare access and disease prevention.

Course Description
The course will provide an update in neurology through presentation of cases representative of those
seen throughout the Western New York community. Emphasizing evidence based approaches, each
topic will begin with a case presentation, followed by a discussion of traditional and new diagnostics,
medications and other treatments; options and contraindications; prognoses; lifestyle considerations;
and recommendations on how to work cooperatively as a community of providers. Cases will be drawn
from examples at Dent Neurologic Institute and those submitted from local clinicians. An expert panel
will then discuss the causes of, and potential solutions for, the unsustainable escalation in cost, increasing
healthcare premiums, and uncomfortable burdens being placed on physicians as financial gate-keepers.
An interactive learning session called NeuroBowl will conclude the meeting, with an Audience Response
System engaging the audience in decision making under the mentoring eye of the experts.

Objectives
1. Understand clinical indications, traditional and breakthrough diagnostics and treatments, and cost
considerations in the treatment of neurologic disorders.

2. Develop community team-based strategies that improve outcomes through speed of access and
efficiency of care.

3. Improve awareness of short and long term strategies for reducing episode-of-care costs, while improving
outcomes.
