Project
A StrikeRisk Project is where you manage and organize all the files that go into creating the end
result (called the "reports").
StrikeRisk Project files have a .srpx file extension.

Case Page 1 of 1

Home > StrikeRisk Concepts > Case

Case
A StrikeRisk Case is a single instance of a risk assessment for a particular Structure. Different
cases may be developed within a Project on the grounds of differing protection measures applied,
differing levels of detail (e.g. more or less zones) or even different structures on the same site.

Environmental Influence Page 1 of 1

Home > StrikeRisk Concepts > Environmental Influence

Environmental Influence
The average annual number N of dangerous events due to lightning flashes influencing an object
X
to be protected depends on a number of environmental Influences, such as, thunderstorm activity
of the region where the object is located and the characteristics of the location surrounding the
object.
Environmental influences are entered via the Environment tab of an open Case.

Structure
The Structure (or object) being considered (known as the primary Structure) may take the form of all
or a portion of a particular Structure. The primary Structure may be considered in isolation or by
taking into account any other (secondary structures) connected to it via conductive services.
Structure details are entered via the Structures tab of an open Case.

Zone Page 1 of 1

Zone
Part of a Structure with homogeneous characteristics where only one set of parameters is involved
in assessment of a risk component. For example two zones may be identified on the basis of
different precautions against fire.
Zone details are entered via the Zones tab of an open Case.

Protection measures Page 1 of 1

Home > StrikeRisk Concepts > Protection measures

Protection measures
Protection measures are the steps taken to reduce a particular primary risk. Certain measures
may effect one risk while having no effect on another. Typical measures include:

z The fitting of a structural LPS

z The fitting of service entrance (equipotential bonding) SPDs

z The fitting of a coordinated SPD set.

z Improved fire protection systems.

Case template Page 1 of 1

Home > StrikeRisk Concepts > Case template

Case template
Every StrikeRisk Case is based on a Case template. A Case template determines the basic
structure for a Case and default settings for text and number fields as well as default choices for
drop-down boxes. Within StrikeRisk you can create your own Case templates.

Develop a Project Page 1 of 1

Home > Getting Started > Basic Steps > Develop a Project

Develop a Project
The following is a recommended strategy for developing a Project within StrikeRisk. Not all of the
tasks are necessary to develop a project, but you will probably want to complete most of them.

z Create a new Project based on one of the available standard templates.

z Define the Project properties

z Develop an original Case

z Define the Environmental influences

z Define the Primary Structure (the structure under consideration)

z Define any connected Secondary Structures

z Define any connected Lines

z Define any Zones (areas) of the Primary Structure with common characteristics

z Develop one or more solution Cases (if necessary)

z Define any Protection measures

z Generate reports

Develop Cases Page 1 of 1

Home > Getting Started > Basic Steps > Develop Cases

Develop Cases
The heart of each StrikeRisk Project are its Cases. Each Case is a separate risk assessment in its
own right.
Each Case is used to carry out a series of calculations using relevant formulae to determine the
actual risk R for the Structure under review. The designer must ascertain/decide the type of losses
relevant to the structure, enter a number of dimensions and various weighting factors relative to the
Structure, along with various assigned values from the appropriate tables in the Annexes of IEC/EN
62305-2. All of the foregoing can be entered or is accessible within each Case.
The calculated risk R is then compared to its corresponding value of R .
T
If the result shows R <= R then the Structure is adequately protected for a particular type of loss.
T
If the result shows R > R then the Structure is not adequately protected for the type of loss,
T
therefore protection measures need to be applied. These protection measures are determined from
relevant tables given in IEC/EN 62305-2. Again these can be set within each Case
The aim, by a series of trial and error calculations is to ultimately apply sufficient protection
measures until the risk R is reduced below that of R .

Generate reports
The ultimate aim of StrikeRisk is to produce the results of IEC/EN 62305-2 Risk Management
calculations in a format that can be passed to a customer or easily incorporated within the
documentation of an engineering project.
StrikeRisk allows the user to review/generate a number of different forms of output.

Setting the highlight colour for Risk results that are acceptable
The colour selection chosen is used in the Summary Pane and the Results pane of a Case every
time a result is less than or equal to its tolerable risk.

To set the highlight colour for Risk results that are tolerable:

1. Select the Home tab of the Ribbon.

2. Click the Acceptable Risk dropdown button. The Windows Colour dialogue appears.
3. In the Windows Colour dialogue, choose a colour from either the basic colours or click More
Colours and choose a custom colour.
4. All Summary Pane and the Results pane results less than or equal to the relevant tolerable
risk will now be displayed in the selected colour.
