DOM-Slider Crank Mech.

This document discusses the static force analysis of a single slider crank mechanism. It explains how to draw the free body diagrams of each link, perform force analysis by constructing force polygons, and determine the driving torque T2 by considering the equilibrium of link 2.

Static force analysis: Slider crank mechanism

• It is a slider crank mechanism subjected to an

external force “P” acting on link-4

• The external force is supported by the input torque

applied on crank

Static force analysis: Slider crank mechanism

• In order to carry out force analysis, the free body

diagrams of the links are developed

Static force analysis: Slider crank mechanism

• Link-2 is acted upon by

two forces F32, F12 and
torque T

• Direction of F32 is known

• Direction of F12 is not

known
Under the action of these two forces and a
torque the link has to be in equilibrium

Static force analysis: Slider crank mechanism

• Link-3 is acted upon by

two forces F23, F43

• Direction of F23 is
known

• Direction of F43 known

Under the action of these two forces the link has

to be in equilibrium; It is a two force member

Static force analysis: Slider crank mechanism
• Link-4 is acted upon by
three forces F34, F14 and
the external force P

• Direction of F34 is known

• Direction of F14 is known

Under the action of these three forces the link has

to be in equilibrium; It is a three force member

Static force analysis: Slider crank mechanism

• P: External force for which magnitude, directions

and sense are known

• F34: Direction is known

• F14: direction is known

Drawing force polygon

• The force polygon for link-4 is drawn as a triangle

• Draw vector representing force P taking suitable scale

• Draw the direction of F34 through one of the ends of F

• Draw the direction of F14 through the other end of F

• Where these two lines intersect, completes the force

polygon

Force analysis

• From the force polygon drawn for link-4 F34 and F14 are
determined completely

• Force F34 and F43 are equal and opposite

• Link -3 is a two force member, hence force F34 and F23 are
equal and opposite to achieve equilibrium

• F23 is determined completely

Static force analysis: Slider crank mechanism

• Consider equilibrium of link-2 to determine the

torque T

Determination of torque T
• Link-2 is acted upon by two forces F32, F12 and torque T

• The force F32 is completely known as F23 is known

• Considering equilibrium of link-2,

T2  F12 xh  F32 xh

• Measure “h” and use to determine torque “T2”
