Unit 2 Problems

This document contains two questions regarding distillation column design and analysis. Question 1 provides Antoine constants for two substances and asks to calculate the vapor composition from a distillation column operating at 1 atm and producing a liquid product with x=0.3. Question 2 provides more details on a distillation column separating a mixture at 1 atm, including calculating amounts of top and bottom products, minimum reflux ratio, number of plates, and compositions for various operating conditions and feed types. It also includes a second problem regarding a toluene/styrene mixture.

Subject: Unit Operation (2); CHE 210 Term: Sep – Jan 2017-2018
Examiner: Examination Committee Time: 90 min.
Final Term Examination
Answer the Following Questions :
Question (1):- (8 marks)
1- The Antoin's coefficients for substance "A" and substance "B" are given as:
A B C
Substance A 6.95087 1342.31 219.187
Substance B 6.99053 1453.43 215.31
A differential unit operating at 1 atm was designed to receive a mixture of 65 moles "A" and
35 moles "B", to obtain a liquid product of x= 0.3. Calculate the average composition of the
vapor produced.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question (2):- (32 marks)
A mixture containing 60 moles of substance "A" and 40 moles of substance "B" is fed into a
distillation tower that operates at 1 atm, as saturated liquid. The desired compositions of
top and bottom products are 0.93 and 0.08, respectively. Having the same Antoin's
constants for substances A & B as the previous question, calculate:
1- The amount of top & bottom products
2- Plot the X - Y diagram at the average relative volatility "α"
3- Determine the minimum reflux ratio, (Rmin) and the minimum number of plates.
If the tower operates with R = 2.5:
4- Write the equations of top and bottom operating lines in this case.
5- Determine the theoretical number of plates and the order of feed plate.
6- Calculate the composition of L and V for the first two plates from the top analytically.
If the feed is changed to enter as saturated vapor and R is kept as 2.5:
7- Write the equation of q-line in this case.
8- Calculate the amounts of liquid and vapor streams in the stripping section
If the feed is half vaporized and the reflux is R = 3
9- Determine the number of plates in this case, and also the order of the feed plate.

2- A mixture containing 45 moles toluene and 55 moles styrene is fed into a distillation
tower that operates at 1 atm, to obtain a top product of composition 0.95 and a bottom
product of composition 0.06, Take α = 2.5

Calculate:

a) The amount of top & bottom products

b) The minimum number of plates required

c) The minimum reflux ratio, (Rmin), if the feed is introduced as saturated liquid

d) The number of theoretical plates if the tower operates at R = 1.5 × Rmin , determine also
the

feed position approximately if the feed is introduced as saturated vapor

e)By analytical method, calculate the composition of liquid & vapor streams leaving each
one of the first three plates.

f)Calculate the number of theoretical plates for the following case:

 T(feed) = 90ºC Tb.p(feed) = 130ºC

 Cp(Toluene, J/g) = 1.763 Cp(Styrene, J/g) = 1.815
 λ(Toluene, Cal/g) = 86.80 λ(Styrene, Cal/g) = 94.410
