Electro-Chlorination Disinfection System For Point of Use Water Purifier
Background
Hygiene maintenance is something that is most important in case for water purifier;
something that is not taken seriously in most of situation. In the recent study conducted by
R&D reported the presence of Pathogen and coliform bacteria. In addition to these Cyst and
Mould were also reported. The present of these kind of bacteria shows the infected of water
after purification. The majority of these kind of bacteria occur in biofilms rather than in water
phase. Microorganisms can enter the purifier through two main categories firstly surviving
the treatment process of water purifier as most microorganisms found in the purifier are also
found in the water source. Secondly the recontamination; the purifier pipes and tank are
major places after purification and requires most hygienic condition, as water gets hold up or
stored in these areas make these areas susceptible for getting infringement by pathogen
microbes. The water is also contaminated from leaking pipes, joints, and valves that allow for
the entry of microbes.
Innovation Idea
Disinfection of product can be done by various ways including the Sodium Hypo Chlorite,
Ozone, Hydrogen peroxide. Hypo chlorite has been traditional been use as very effective
disinfectant due to ease of production and residual effect which maintain the disinfection for
period of time.
Chlorination can be done by either directly using hypo chloride or making the hypo onsite by
using the chlorine gas or by electro-chlorinator. The electro chlorinator can be size to suite
the demand for cleaning of the purifier tank and pipe.

How it works?
Disinfectant hypochlorous acid/hypochlorite is produced at the anode. The following simplified
reaction mechanism First, chlorine is produced electrochemically from chloride ions dissolved in the
water Chlorine hydrolyses in water and hypochlorous acid (HClO) is formed.

Concept 2 (Inbuilt System)
Challenges?
Down Sizing the electrode size
Concentration of Hypo ( Circulation / Dosing )
Maintain the residual chlorine level less than 0.2 ppm in the tank after disinfection
Way Forward
Development of System as outside system for beginning and later as inbuilt system
