Break-out Plan #10

Date: November 22, 2018
Break-out Title/Topic: Operant Conditioning Worksheet and Art Activity Resources Time
Bridge-in:
 “Education is what survives, when what has been learned has been forgotten”
 “A failure is not always a mistake, it may simply be the best one can do under
the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying” – B.F. Skinner (both)
 In case you couldn’t tell, this is one of Dr. Jackson’s favourite topics and she has 1
been so excited to teach it to you all. Today’s lesson is on operant conditioning. Minute
Pre-Assessment:
 Is anyone confused about the lecture that Dr. Singleton-Jackson just gave?
 Can anyone explain to me the definitions of: positive reinforcement… negative 2
reinforcement… positive punishment… negative punishment? Minutes
Learning Objective:
 By participating in this activity, you will learn that operant conditioning is a
learning process that occurs when an individual makes an implicit association
between a particular behavior and a consequence.
 During the second half of today’s break-out, you will get the chance to partake
in a pleasurable activity that should reinforce your completion of the worksheet 1
and increase your likelihood of completing future worksheets. Minute
Participatory Activity:
Everyone
 1- First, I will divide the mentees into partners and hand out the operant Print a minimum
conditioning worksheets, which they will complete for credit in class. of 5 worksheets
 2- Secondly, these worksheets give them 13 scenarios of this concept, which plus the answer
mentees must determine as positive or negative, reward or punishment key for myself.
 3- Third, once they complete the worksheets, I will check for incorrect answers.
I will have them guess again and explain why their original guess was incorrect. Bring coloured
 4- Next, as a positive reward for completing their worksheets properly (and also paper, markers,
as five minutes of stress relief during this busy time), I will set up coloured pens and stickers
markers and stickers and paper, allowing them to make a piece of art that for the freestyle
symbolizes their emotional state lately. art session.
 5- Lastly, I will invite all mentees who are comfortable to pose for a picture with
15
their artwork.
Minutes
Post-Assessment:
 I will assess students’ knowledge of the concept, including the 4 aforementioned
terms, by assessing their speed and accuracy on the worksheet. I will also ask
mentees whether they prefer operant or classical conditioning, and why? 1
Minute
Summary:
I will debrief students on the activity and remind them that the behaviorist principle of operant conditioning
states that behavior that is followed by a favorable stimulus is likely to continue, whereas behavior that is
proceeded by an aversive stimulus is likely to cease. I will also emphasize that the goal of today was to teach
them the association between a behavior (completing the worksheet) and a positive outcome or reward
(partaking in the art activity, which is meant to pleasurable and reduce their stress). 3
