Syllabus: Washtenaw Community College Mth160 - Basic Statistics - Fall 18
You can option to add a 3-hole punched paper text at very low cost that includes delivery. There
are options from the WCC Bookstore as well as from the publisher. Here is the most important
thing to know: All students can get the ConnectMath/eBook combination immediately without
need of waiting for financial aid because McGraw-Hill permits 14-day free access, if needed. In
that case, use the Financial Aid Temporary Access Code and add your purchased code to that
account later (do NOT start another account or you will lose all past work).
Required Calculator Information: TI-84 Plus (or TI-83 Plus) graphing calculator.
Important: Class instruction, activities, homework and testing will be integrated ONLY with the
TI-83/TI-84 calculator.

Classroom policies:
(1)No laptops, cell phones, head phones or other electronic devices are allowed in class. Please
put them away before entering the classroom. If you are seen, using an electronic device
during class you will be asked to leave for the day and will be counted as absent.
(2)Please do not socialize during class. If you are talking during class I will ask you once to be
quiet. If I have to ask again you will be asked to leave the class and will be counted as absent
for the day.
Grading (Total 100% or 1000 points): Evaluations will be based upon the components
and percentages:
Homework (HW) 31 % (14 * 22 pts.)
Exit Quizzes (EQ#) 5 % (17*3 pts)
In Class Quizzes (Q#) 14 % (8 * 20 pts, the lowest grade will be dropped)
3 Unit Exams (EU#) 30% (3* 100 pts)
Final Exam (EF) 20 % (1* 200 pts)
Homework (31 % -14 * 22 pts.): There will be a homework assignment for each chapter
of the book covered in class and for each unit plus one cumulative. These will be done
on CONNECT. Homework assignments will be scored and graded as you complete them,
giving you immediate feedback on your progress. You can repeat the homework
assignments as many times as you like, and the highest score will be kept. You should
strive to get 100% on all the homework for the sake of your grade but especially since
that will help you learn and prepare for the exams. Each homework assignment will be
worth 22 points, and homework will account for 31% of your final grade. Homework
assignments do have due dates, listed on CONNECT. Note, however, that all old
homework assignments are accessible even after the due date (for extra practice). You
can access all old CONNECT homework via the student grade book.
Exit Quizzes (EQ#) (5%- 17*3 pts) During most class meetings, you will be given practice
problems or quizzes (EQ#) to work on in class. For the practice problems, you may work in a
group of two or three. Some quizzes will be done on your own, and others may be completed in
small groups. Practice problems and quizzes will worth 3 points each. If you are absent, none of
these will be made up. Your overall percentage on these exercises will count as 5% of your final
grade.
In Class Quizzes (14% -8* 20 pts); There are 8 in class quizzes. The lowest quiz mark
will be dropped.
Unit Exams (30% -3* 100 pts) The exams will cover all sections since the previous
exam, and will be similar to the Unit Homework. Unit exams (3 total) are worth 100
points each and will account for 30% of your final grade (10% each). Students may take
the unit exams in class, or at the Testing Center. If you still choose to take the exams at
the Testing Center, check the working time.
Final Exam (20 % -1* 200 pts); The final exam will be cumulative (i.e. it will cover
everything in the course) and will also be in class or at the testing center. The final exam
will account for 20% of your final grade. The due date for the final exam is the last day of
the course.
2
*****(regarding quizzes and exams): There are no make-up opportunities for quizzes or
exams, since lowest quiz mark is dropped, and since exams are offered in both
classroom and testing center scenarios. If you do not take an exam in class and miss
taking the exam in the Testing Center, you will receive no credit for this exam.
Please verify the Testing Center hours

Students may use one 3”x5” card (hand written on both sides) and a graphing calculator
during the in class quizzes and up to two 3”x5” cards (hand written on both sides) and
a graphing calculator during the Unit and Final exams.
Grades will be updated on both Blackboard and CONNECT throughout the semester.
The following final grade system will apply:

Safety & Security
Your safety and security is important to us. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Here are
some important safety tips for the upcoming semester. Also watch your WCC email for
safety tips throughout the semester.
Emergency Notification Service: We encourage you to sign up for the Emergency
Notification Service in MyWCC. You will receive timely notifications if the College
is closed due to weather or other emergency.
Fire: If there is a fire or other reason a building needs to be evacuated, the fire alarm
will ring. Exit the building using the nearest stairway. Do not use elevators. Make
sure you stay at least 150 feet from the building until the all clear signal is given.
Tornado: If a tornado warning is issued for the WCC campus area, the tornado siren
will activate outside and an emergency message will broadcast throughout campus.
Please seek shelter in the closest room/area designated as a tornado shelter. If you are
unable to find a marked tornado shelter, seek shelter in an inner hallway or restroom,
away from exterior windows.
Property Security: Do not leave laptop computers, smart phones, tablets or other
valuables unattended. If parking on campus, roll up your windows, lock your doors
and keep personal belongings out of sight.
Call Public Safety (734-973-3411 or 3411 from a College house phone) to report any
suspicious activity or safety concern. If you see something, say something!

Suggestions Regarding Reporting Responsibilities of Faculty
(*Reminder to Faculty - be mindful of your assignments and suggested topics. Consider
whether the topic is requesting/suggesting student disclosures on reportable situations. A
sample awareness statement to provide to students is shown below.)
Dear Student;
While I want you to feel comfortable coming to me with issues you may be struggling
with or concerns you may be having, please be aware that I have reporting requirements
that are part of my job responsibilities at Washtenaw Community College.
For example, if you inform me of an issue of sexual assault, sexual misconduct, or gender
discrimination - I am required to bring it to the attention of the institution’s Title IX
Coordinator or Deputy Coordinator. If you would like to talk to either of those
individuals directly, they can be reached at:
Linda Blakey
VP of Student and Academic Services & WCC Title IX Coordinator
[email protected]
Larry Aeilts
Dean/Ombudsman & WCC Deputy Title IX Coordinator
[email protected]
or
[email protected]
Information on all reporting options for issues of sexual assault, sexual misconduct, or
gender discrimination (including confidential reporting options) is available at:
