Week 8 Lesson Reflections

Lesson Reflection 10
Sunday, October 21st, students proceeded with subtraction concept and solving equations
on their mathematics book. In today’s lesson, implementing learning and managing student’s
behavior are the competencies that I think I have succeeded in. This is because, according to my
observation students acquired the subtraction concept effectively. To elaborate, all students from
grade one sections were getting involved in today’s lesson by participating in the classroom. Also,
students were called out in order to solve the questions on the board and explain the methodology
of solving it. Thus, students were raising their hands in order to come out and solve the questions
because they knew the answers. Adding to that, students currently know how to use the pictographs
and the square tiles to help them in subtracting. This is because, students were practicing it for one
week and now they are using and applying their knowledge effectively.
Whereas, managing students behavior is the other aspect that I think I have succeeded in.
This is because, all students were on task and followed my rules in which they raise their hand
before answering and showing me their thumbs up when they finish their work instead of saying
finish. I think this is because, students were informed about the classroom behavior rules at the
beginning of the lesson. Also, students who were following the rules were rewarded by adding
Dojo points into their accounts. This allowed other students to follow the rules in order to be
rewarded and please their teacher.

On the other hand, giving clear expectation from students work is the aspect that needs
improvement. This is because, while I was observing students I noticed that some of them didn’t
show their work (drawing circles and crossing out the taken away numbers) to show their
understanding. However, I think this occurred because students weren’t informed about this and it
led to a misconception. However, in my future lessons I will ensure to inform and model my
expectations from students work at the beginning in order to avoid a similar misconception.
Lesson Reflection 11
Monday, October 22nd, students completed solving subtraction equations on their
mathematics book. Announcing clear expectations and managing students behavior were the
aspects that I have succeeded in. I know this because, in this lesson I announced my expectations
from the students of showing their work (drawing circles and crossing out the taken away
numbers). Therefore, while walking around the classroom and observing students work, I noticed
that all of the students followed my instructions and drew the circles in order to show their work.
Also, before giving out the homework for them, I reminded them to do the same steps in today’s
lesson while they complete their homework. Adding to that, students were informed of the
consequences behind not showing their work while solving their homework in which they will not
be given Dojo points as a reward.
Whereas, managing students behavior was the other aspect that I think I have succeeded
in. This is because, all of the lessons ran smoothly without any misconception occurring from
students. Also, some students who had poor performance and behavior are progressing well in the
classroom as they are improving in their academic progress. This is because, students who are
working hard, on task, completing their homework and behaving well are rewarded as well as
praised. Therefore, when students are rewarded and praised they continue performing well in order
to please their teacher and get rewarded once again. Fortunately, after building a positive
relationship with all students in grade one sections, I noticed that managing their behavior is not
an obstacle anymore because I know what, when and how to react to the needed situation.

On the other hand, having cooperative leaning sessions is the aspect that needs
improvement. This is because, according to my daily teaching, I noticed that students are not
provided with tasks where they can communicate, interact and acquire knowledge from their
classmates. However, in tomorrow’s lesson (Tuesday, October 23rd) centers will be taking place
during the whole day in order to ensure that this aspect is improved.
Lesson Reflection 12
Tuesday, October 23rd students were introduced to three mathematical centers which
consisted of different activities. In this lesson, managing learning and planning for learning were
the aspects that I think I have succeeded in. I know this because, once all students entered the
classroom all of them were excited and curious to know what they will be doing throughout the
lesson. Therefore, students kept on asking me what will they be doing and whether they will be
given the chance to explore all three centers. Additionally, some students were listening to the
instructions regarding each center in order to be aware of my expectations from them in each
center. This proves that students were hooked, anticipated, engaged throughout the lesson and
enjoyed the centers.
Whereas, planning for learning was the other aspect that I think I have succeeded in. I know
this because, all resources and materials were prepared in advance in order to ensure that time is
used effectively throughout the lesson. Also, once students were told to start with the completing
in the tasks in each center they were provided with an online stop watch projected on the board.
This is because, I wanted students to be aware of the time they have left and use their time
effectively by completing the given tasks.

On the other hand, managing students behavior throughout this lesson was tough and this
aspect needs improvement. This is because, I grouped students according to their ability groups
and divided them into three centers. Also, I asked all students to come with me and I moved them
around the three centers and explained to them all centers at once. This caused a misconception
and behavior issues because once students were told to begin with the activities, most of them were
lost because they didn’t know what to do. However, this misconception could be adapted by diving
students into the three centers and make them complete a certain task to make them busy while I
go to each group and explain the centers one by one to ensure they understand what to do.
Lesson Reflection 13
Wednesday, October 23rd students proceeded working in the mathematical centers. In this
lesson, managing students behavior and implementing learning were the aspects that I think I have
succeeded in. I know this because, I applied my previous lesson reflection recommendation in
which I moved students according to their group into their centers and played for them counting
numbers song. To elaborate, when students were listening to the song I moved around the centers
and explained to the students the needed requirements. Therefore, my MST supported me in
explaining centers to save time and ensure students are on track. In this way, managing students
in this lesson was effectively managed and minor misconceptions occurred such as talking loudly
only.
Whereas, implementing learning was the other aspect that I think I have succeeded in. I
know this because, in each center I modelled the tasks for the students and made them repeat after
me the steps of completing those tasks. Adding to that, I worked with the lower group and
supported them to ensure that they are benefiting from the centers. Also, students in the lower
group worked very hard under my supervision and scaffolding. Therefore, students were on task
throughout this lesson because, I announced my expectations from them. Thus, all students were
rewarded by giving them Dojo points in order to reinforce their progress and positive behavior.
This proves that I have succeeded in this aspect and improved from the previous lesson because
my MST guided me and informed me about some adjustments to apply so as to make the lesson
run smoothly.

On the other hand, planning for learning was the aspect that needed improvement
throughout this lesson. This is because, filling the missing numbers center requires the students to
complete the missing number worksheet and colour after they finish. Hence, there wasn’t enough
worksheets for all students to complete which required me to give them counting objects worksheet
in order to run out the center without misconceptions. Although, in my future lessons I must check
that all materials, resources and worksheets are provided for all students from grade 1 A, B, C and
D sections.
Lesson Reflection 14
Thursday October 25th, formative assessments were completed by all students in grade one.
Therefore, students were examined about subtraction up to 20 context. Throughout this
assessment, managing students behavior and planning for assessment were the competencies that
I think I have succeeded in. I know this because, throughout the assessment all students were
following the exam policies and rules which are: students aren’t allowed to talk, get out of their
seats or look into others exam paper. Therefore, all students were rewarded because they followed
the rules effectively which led the assessment to run smoothly.
Whereas, planning for the assessment was the other aspect that I think I have succeeded in.
I know this because, papers were printed and prepared in advance in order to ensure that time is
used wisely. Therefore, while planning for this assessment, I ensured that students knew some of
the problems so as to not surprise them since they are still in grade one. Therefore, this assessment
was conducted not to ensure that all students excel in it. However, it was conducted just to ensure
whether students know the concept of subtraction in which numbers are becoming small and they
are taking away.
On the other hand, implementing the assessment was the area that needed improvement.
This is because, when students were given the exam, most of them didn’t know how to solve the
equations. Therefore, I explained to them that the big number represent how many circles they
should draw. Whereas, the small numbers represent how many they should cross out. Yet, students
didn’t understand or know how to solve it. Thus, my MST interfered by suggesting that we
should’ve drawn the circles for the students and all they have to do is count and cross out the
circles. Moreover, I applied his recommendation in other grade one sections and students were on
track and aced the exam. I know this because, I assessed their exam and majority of the classroom
got eight out of ten.
