Control & Relay Panels

Control and relay panels in substations are used to control and monitor electrical equipment like transformers and feeders. They contain circuits for power, DC distribution, AC distribution, metering, indication, annunciation, and protection relays. The panels include devices like current transformers, potential transformers, and different types of relays to monitor conditions and protect the electrical components.

CONTROL AND RELAY PANELS

IN SUBSTATION
INTRODUCTION
● A control & relay panel is designed to provide to control the line
or transformer through outdoor protection devices at
substations.
● The control & Relay panels consists of main and auxiliary
relays, annunciation relay, fuses, links, switches, wiring, labels,
terminal blocks, earthing terminals, base frame, foundation
bolts, illumination, cable glands etc.
● These panels are used for the control & monitoring of electrical
equipments such as transformers, feeders, capacitor bank and
transfer bus coupler.

Devices in power circuit

Current transformer (CT):

It is used to measure AC current.
● Potential transformer (PT):
It is used in electrical power system for stepping down the
system voltage to a safe value which can be fed to low ratings
meters and relays.

Main protection relay circuit
● Differential protective relay (87) :
Protection status :
● Differential faults: These are the faults
obtained by voltage and current difference in
input and output side of an electrical
component.

Internal faults by using 2nd harmonics restrain
and 5th harmonics blocking logic.
● Over flux detection: Over flux occurs inside the
transformer.
● Restricted earth fault detection: This fault
detection in done only in the restricted zone of
area around the component.
Distance protection relay (21):
Protection status:
● Zone-1, 2, 3, 4 for phase protection.
● SOTF: Provides high speed tripping when
energizing a power line on to a short circuit
fault on the line.
● Auto reclose (AR): Auto closing of CB after the
fault is cleared.
● AR lockout: If AR initiated it will check for
reclose, if not reclosed it will give commmand
to master trip to trip the breaker.
● Power swing block: It will show the frequency
protection.
● Broken conductor
● VT fuse fail
● Directional OC/EF relay (67):
Protection status:

● OC-phase (OC)

● EF-ground (EF)

● Instantaneous OC/EF
