Rounding making a number simpler but

keeping its value close to what it
was.

place)

Thousand the number equivalent to the product of a

hundred and ten; 1,000

Students’ Prior Knowledge:

- Students already know what is rounding.
- Some students know that more than 5, they have to add 1 and less than 5, they have to subtract 1.
- Students can make a probability.
Possible Problems and Misconceptions:
- Students will confuse between nearest 100 and 1000.
- Students will confuse between which numbers get 1.

Solutions:
- Give the students examples for nearest 100 and nearest 1000.
- Remind the students with the numbers that give us 1 and others who subtract 1.

Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher questions to promote HOTS: Can you tell me what is the rounding, what is the
difference between nearest 100 and 1000?
Student communication and use of math language: when we have more than 5 we add 1 to the next
number, and when we have less than 5, we take 1 from number.
Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge): time:
- I will let the students to sit on the carpet quietly and listen to me.
- I will ask the students “Can you remember what is rounding mean? Can you tell me
what are the rich numbers? What are the poor numbers? 3 mins
- I will have a review online game that about rounding to nearest 100, and it’s has a
varied of questions about rounding. Moreover, it has multiple choices questions. This
will help the students to be familiar with the new topic and link it to their prior
knowledge. 3 mins

Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures):

- I will show a PowerPoint that has examples for the rounding numbers to the nearest
1000.

2
- I will begin with the simplest numbers to round then go up to difficult numbers to
round. I will show them step by step that at first, they have to list poor number 5 mins
1,2,3,4 and rich numbers 5,6,7,8,9. Then, highlight the thousand place which is the
fourth place from the ones. Then, see if the number get 1 or not. And finally return
the rest numbers to zeros.
- I will ask students about where the number that I have to round and why? 5 mins
- Then, I will ask them to list the rich and poor numbers that will help them when
they round the numbers.
- Finally, I will show three questions, and let the students to solve it in their boards.
- After that, I will check the answers with them and ask them to solve it in the board
step by step. 5 mins
Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment):

- After the first activity, I will show them the three worksheets for each level and 10
explain it for them. mins
- For low level students, they will have to circle the correct answer. They will have
simple numbers to round as 1200, 1300, 1400, and the answers will be in multiple
choice. They have to highlight the thousands they round it.
- For Medium level, they will have a worksheet that include about 15 questions and
the students will have numbers as 1390, 2389, 8973,
- For high level, they will have a worksheet that have challenge with rounding bigger
numbers as 12983, 43920, 27890, 298472.
- I will check the students answers for the worksheet for the high, low, and medium
level.
- If the students finish early, I will give the students colorful cards with red and black
colors and let the students play in pairs and guess what is the answer for the
rounding number. I will explain the game for them and let them begin.
- I will gather the students on the carpet and ask them what they like and
dislike about the activities.
