Overall aim and context of the lesson

In this lesson the students were able to:

 Investigate different mixtures and solutions.


 Compare how different substances dissolve, react, and float or sink in water.
 Recognize the importance of steps in a scientific investigation.
 Recognize the difference between a solid and a mixture.

Select (S):

This lesson in the fourth session of this course. It is all about how different materials will dissolve,
react, and float or sink in the liquid substance which is the water.

Describe (D):

This lesson for year five students to learn what will happens to different materials (peas, sugar,
baking powder, oil) when they are mixed with water. It was in grade five class in the school. I was
trying to teach them how different materials, such as peas, sugar, baking powder, and oil will
dissolve, react, and float or sink in the water. In this lesson, the students think and figure out of
some of materials or objects that can dissolve, react, and float or sink with the water.
Analyze (A):

I think the students responded with the way that they did because they understood all the
instructions of the activities and the goals of the lesson. I have tested their understanding through
asked them some questions. For example, have you ever made a drink using a powder drink mix
(such as COFFEE or TANG)?, did the powder dissolve completely?, do you think that all powders
will mix as evenly or as quickly as others?. Also, I engaged the students by asked them to think and
find some other materials that will dissolve in the water.

Appraise (A):

There was experiment in this lesson which the students used different materials to see what will
happens to them when they are mixed in water. After that, they discussed and described about
different mixtures that they made it, then they classified which materials that dissolved, reacted,
and floated/sank with the water in their worksheet.

I believe that this lesson meets my teaching goals, because the students understood well the
meaning of the lesson vocabulary such as dissolve, react, float and sink, and they have a lot of
information and experiences about it and I saw that during their writing and discussions about the
different mixtures that they observed through the experiment at the end of the class.
Transform (T):

In the future I will enhance student learning of this lesson through using other ideas to refresh their
thinking more. For example, I will use a lot of questions which can challenge the children to predict
and explain. The implications for my professional practice are it can improve my skills more and
achieve my teaching goals during the semester.
