Weightage: 5%
1. A single story shear frame shown in Fig. a is subjected to arbitrary excitation force specified
in Fig. b. The rigid girder supports a load of X kN/m. Assume the columns bend about their
major axis and neglect their mass.
X = last two digits of your ID number
All students with even ID numbers assume damping factor of ρ = 0.02 for steel structures of
Fe 415 grade.
All students with odd ID numbers assume damping factor of ρ = 0.05 for concrete structures
of M40 grade
Using central difference method evaluate dynamic response for the frame i.e.
displacement u(t), velocity v(t) and acceleration a(t) for a single time step starting with a
time interval of 0.05s from rest till 0.5s.
2. For the multi-storey frame shown in figure, assume k/m = 100 (rads -1)2 and percentage
critical damping as 5%. The natural frequencies and mode shapes area provided. Determine the
following:
a. Damping Matrix using Rayleigh Damping Coefficients
b. Modal Participation Factors
c. The mean peak values of top displacement, base shear, Overturning moment, and Inter-storey
drift between the first and second floors using the response spectrum method of analysis
through SRSS combination rule. Use the digitised smoothed response spectrum of the El
Centro earthquake given below.
3. Choose any problem of your choice from continuous systems (bar, beam and frame) and
calculate the natural frequencies of the system using finite element method with 2, 3, and 4
elements and compare the same with exact solution. No two problems should be same.
