Performance Tasks Grasps

The document describes a performance task where students are asked to: 1) Factor polynomial equations to find zeros and graph them to represent rollercoaster curves. If none are found, apply operations to derive new polynomials. 2) The goal is to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials to determine equations for rollercoaster curves. Students take on the role of a construction company designing rollercoasters. 3) Standards and criteria for success include entering accurate data and graphs.

Assignment
Pick a polynomial equations and factor it out to find the zeros. Graph the polynomial and see if
it represents a roller coaster (does it have minimums and maximums). If it does not have any
mins/max’s, pick another polynomial and apply and operation on it to see what new polynomial
you derive. Find the zeros and graph again. The curves on the graph should represent a
rollercoaster.
GRASPS
Goal: Your goal is to be able to add, subtract and multiply polynomials to help determine a
polynomial equation to accurately measure the curve of a rollercoaster.
Role: You are the head of the construction company designing and building the rollercoasters
for your favorite theme park.
Audience: Fellow coworkers and the people who will ride the rollercoaster.
Situation: You need to find the polynomial that best fits the curve of the rollercoaster you are
going to build.
Product/Performance and Purpose:

 Learn how to apply operations on polynomials

 Enter data in the polynomials and graph to find the best fit curve.
Standards and Criteria for Success: Accurate data and graphs
