Assignment 3 PSLP

1. A 150 ft3 tank containing air needs to be purged of oxygen down to 1% using nitrogen. At 80°F and purging from atmospheric pressure to 20 mm Hg absolute, multiple purge cycles are required using a certain number of moles of nitrogen to fully purge the oxygen. 2. A room with a volume of 25,000 ft3 containing an initial 20% concentration of toluene needs to be purged down to 1% toluene using air at a purge rate of 6 room volumes per hour. The time required to complete this purge process is calculated.

Assignment PSLP (Design to Prevent Fire & Explosion)

1. Use a vacuum purging technique to purge oxygen from 150-ft3 tank containing air. Reduce the
oxygen concentration to 1% using pure nitrogen as the inert gas. The temperature is 80 oF. Assume
that the purge goes from atmospheric pressure to 20 mm Hg absolute. Determine the number of
purge cycles required and the total moles of nitrogen used.

2. Use the sweep through purging technique to reduce the concentration of toluene from an initial
20% to 1% in a room with a volume of 25,000 ft3. Assume that the room is purged with air at a
rate of 6 room volumes per hour. How long will it take to complete this purge process?
