Lesson Plan Measuring of Mass
Lesson Plan Measuring of Mass
When you want to know how heavy the object is, you are quantifying a physical attribute
of that object called mass. We buy things is in cans, jars, and sachets. Written in these containers
are net weights of the contents. Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
What are the units we use for mass? Do we need measuring devices to find the mass of
objects accurately? What are these devices called?
2. Motivation
C. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation and Discussion
Units of mass were developed when people started to trade to each other. The Arabs used
grained of wheat called karob while the English used “stone” as a unit of mass. The French based
the metric system on what were considered to be constant quantities.
A gram (g) is the basic unit of mass in the metric system. It is defined as the mass `of one
cubic centimeter or 1 milliliter of water at a temperature of 4º C.
The kilogram (kg) is the mass of one cubic decimeter of water of 4º C.
Kilogram, gram, and milligram are related in a manner similar to kilometer, meter, and
milliliter.
The table below shows the relationship of the metric units for mass to the gram.
Unit Symbol Unit In Grams
kilogram kg 1000 g
hectogram hg 100 g
dekagram dag 10 g
gram g 1g
decigram dg 0.1 g
centigram cg 0.01 g
milligram mg 0.001 g
The interrelatedness of kilogram, liter, and cubic meter can be seen in the table below.
2. Post Activity
kg hg dag g dg cg mg
Count the number of the connectors from kg to g, that is 3 to the right, and then
move the decimal point 3 places to the right.
45.6 kg → 45 60 g
Therefore, 45.6 kg = 45 600 g.
3. Generalization/Application

4. A medium-sized papaya a. 750 g b. 750 kg
5. A can of sardines a. 275 g b. 275 kg
