Group B Expt. No.: 10 Diode Matrix ROM

The document describes an experiment to study a diode matrix ROM using IC 74138. The circuit diagram and components are listed. Observations of the logic levels at each address from 000 to 111 are recorded in a table. The results show that the diode matrix ROM is used to read data from various memory locations. The theory explains that ROMs store information permanently and describes how the 3 to 8 decoder and switching diodes allow access to 8 memory locations containing 4-bit data values based on a 3-bit address.

Diode Matrix ROM

Aim: - To study Diode Matrix ROM using IC 74138.

Apparatus: - Diode Matrix ROM Kit.

Circuit Diagram: - Refer to the blank sheet

Procedure: -

1) Trace the circuit and note down the component values.

2) Provide the address 000 to 111 and record the logic levels through LED for
each address.

Result:-

The diode matrix ROM is used to read the data in various memory locations of the
ROM.

Theory:-

Many digital devices including micro-computers need to store some information

permanently. This is typically stored in ROM. The ROM is programmed by
manufacturers as per user’s specification. ROMs are classified as non-volatile
memories because they do not lose their data when the power is turned off.
The present diode matrix ROM circuit uses IC 74138: 3 to 8 decoder and switching
diodes for data. This ROM has 8 different memory locations provide 4-bit
information access. The 3 i/p pins (S0, S1, and S2) supply the binary address of the
stored number. The following table represents the information to be recorded in
ROM.

3 to 8 decoder allows the selection of a specific location addressed by 3-bit address.

(n-bit inputs can select 2 n memory locations) . Diodes are connected to the output
lines, depending on whether 1 or 0 is to be recorded. Absence of the glow of diode
indicates bit value 1 and presence of glow, indicates bit value 0.
