This document provides 10 problems for a homework assignment on analysis in one variable. The problems cover determining if sequences are convergent, proving limits of sequences of rational and irrational numbers, properties of convergent sequences, examples of sequences where the limit of absolute values exists but not the sequence itself, proving the limit of a recursively defined sequence, comparing limits of two sequences, relating limits of a positive sequence to the reciprocal sequence, and determining limits of exponential and power sequences.

MTH102: Analysis in One variable

Home Work No. 02

20 January 2018

• Please do as many problems as possible.

• Please maintain a separate notebook for home work problems.
• Tutors will discuss some of these problems during tutorial sessions.
• N denote the set of natural numbers.
• Z denote the ring of integers.
• Q denote the field of rational numbers.
• R denote the field of real numbers.

(1) Determine whether the following sequences are convergent. In either case, prove your claims.
3n+1
(a) sn = 5n−2 .
n
(b) sn = (−1)n .
12n5 +73n4 −18n2 +9
(c) sn = 25n5 +2n3
.

(d) sn = n2 +1 .

(e) sn = ( n2 + n − n).
(f) sn = n1 sin(n).
(g) sn = (−1)n n.
(h) sn = cos( nπ 3 ).
(2) Prove that every real number is the limit of a sequence of rational numbers.
(3) Prove that every real number is the limit of a sequence of irrational numbers.
(4) Let (sn ) be a sequence with lim sn = s. Let a ∈ R such that sn ≥ a for all but finitely many
n. Prove that s ≥ a.
(5) Give an example of a sequence (sn ) such that lim |sn | exists but lim sn does not exist.
Justify your answer. √
(6) Let s1 = 1 and sn+1 =√ sn + 1 for all n ∈ N. Assuming that the sequence (sn ) converges,
prove that lim sn = 1+2 5 .
(7) Let (sn ) and (tn ) be two sequences of real numbers. Suppose that there exists K ∈ N such
that sn ≤ tn for all n > K.
(a) Prove that if lim sn = +∞, then lim tn = +∞.
(b) Prove that if lim tn = −∞, then lim sn = −∞.
(8) Let (sn ) be a sequence of positive real numbers. Prove that lim sn = +∞ if and only if
lim s1n = 0.
(9) Prove that 

 0 if 0 ≤ |a| < 1
1 if a=1

lim an =

 +∞ if a > 1
Does not exist if a ≤ −1.
