Assignment #1: Solution

Bio-photonics is the study of light interactions with biological matter. The document provides two examples of calculating properties of light in different media. The first example calculates the speed of light in a medium with a refractive index of 1.34 as 2.24×108 m/s. The second example calculates the photon energies of ultraviolet light wavelengths between 190-315 nm, finding energies of 6.5295 eV and 3.9384 eV respectively.

Problem #1.2
Solution:
Speed of light c=3*108m/s
Refractive Index n=1.34
Formula:

n=c/v
C=Speed or velocity of light in vacuum

V=Speed or velocity of light in medium

Required:
V=?

V=c / n
V=3*108 / 1.34
V=2.23880597*108m/s
V=2.24×108m/s
Introduction to Bio-photonics

Problem # 1.3
Solution:
Wavelength = (190-315) nm
Calculate the photon energy E (eV) =?
Since,
E (eV) = 1.2406/ λ (µm)

Unit conversion:
UV-C 190 nm 0.19 µm
UV-A 315 nm 0.315 µm

For 0.19 µm:

E (eV) = 1.2406 /0.19(µm)

E (eV) = 6.5295 eV
For 0.315 µm:
E (eV) = 1.2406 /0.315(µm)
E (eV) = 3.9384 eV
