Objective and reform in America from 1801 to 1861 by describing territorial expansion and how
it affected the political map of the United States, with emphasis on the Louisiana
Purchase, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the acquisitions of Florida, Texas,
Oregon, and California.
Activity The students will be involved in creating a map that depicts the Louisiana Purchase. I
will begin the class by giving the students background information for the Louisiana
Purchase. I will then show them 2 maps; a before and after of the United States in
regard to the acquisition of the Louisiana territory. The students will then create their
own maps of the U.S. using a map maker on the NatGeo website. I will have an
example map of the mapped out 13 colonies that shows the students how the program
works. The point of mapping out the Louisiana Purchase is to give students the
opportunity to see how to country changed throughout the Colonial period of American
