FLOW CHECK WHEN THE BHA IS 10M BELOW THE ROTARY TABLE. ENSURE YOU
KNOW THE DISPLACEMENT OF TUBULAR BEING PULLED AND RECORD ON TRIP
TANK SHEET.
WHEN HANDLING DRILL COLLARS AND HWDP, WAIT UNTIL DERRICKMAN HAS
INSTALLED THE STAND IN THE MONKEY BOARD FINGER BEFORE LOWERING
BLOCKS.
RE-SET AND TEST WHEN STAND IS RACKED OR RUN IN THE HOLE, ANYTIME
COM HAS BEEN BYPASSED.
WHEN USING THE ROTARY TABLE, ENSURE IT IS IN THE ROTARY MODE AND NOT
THE TOP DRIVE MODE. ENSURE ROTARY IS SELECTED IN THE CORRECT
ROTATIONAL DIRECTION.
WHEN LAYING DOWN SUBS, STABILIZERS ETC, USE AIR HOIST, SWIVEL AND LIFT
CAP. GIVE GOOD SIGNALS TO AIR HOIST OPERATOR. HAVE ENOUGH MEN TO
GUIDE ITEM CLEAR OF WORK AREA. SET DOWN SLOWLY.
WHEN DC'S ARE SENT TO THE TENDER ENSURE LIFTING PROTECTORS ARE
INSTALLED ON BOTH ENDS AND MADE TIGHT WITH A BAR. DO NOT HAMMER
THEM TIGHT. SUBS SHOULD BE SENT DOWN IN A BASKET WHEN FEASABLE.
WHEN PULLING DRILLING BHA, REMOVE ALL CUTTINGS MUD, GUMBO, FROM

DRILL COLLARS, STABILIZERS, SUBS ETC. TO PREVENT DRIED MATERIAL
FALLING FROM THE MAST.
WHEN RACKING DRILLING JARS IN THE DERRICK, ENSURE JAR SAFETY CLAMPS
ARE INSTALLED.
ENSURE ALL PERSONNEL ARE WARNED TO KEEP HANDS AND FEET FROM
UNDERNEATH JARS, BUMPER SUBS ETC. WHEN THEY ARE PICKED UP OR LAID
DOWN.
WHEN ENTIRE STRING IS OUT OF THE HOLE, FLOW CHECK. BLEED DOWN
MANIFOLD PRESSURE TO 3500 KPA. OPEN HCR VALVE AND CLOSE SHEAR RAMS.
START TRIP TANK PUMP AND SET ALARMS FOR 200 LTRS GAIN AND LOSS.
NOTE:- PLAN AHEAD TO EXPEDITE OPERATIONS AND TO KEEP THE
SHEAR RAM CLOSURE TIME TO A MINIMUM.
NOTE:- IF LOSSES ARE ANTICIPATED A SET OF PIPE RAMS SHOULD BE
CLOSED INSTEAD OF SHEAR RAMS AND TRIP TANK USED TO MONITOR
THE WELL.
BEFORE OPENING THE SHEAR RAMS GIVE AN AUDIBLE WARNING AND PROCEED
ONLY WHEN THE AREA IS CLEAR. OPEN VALVE ON CHOKE MANIFOLD TO GO TO
THE DEGASSER, THEN CLOSE HCR VALVE AND RESTORE MANIFOLD PRESSURE
TO 1500 PSI. FLOW CHECK.
NOTE:- ENSURE NO OBSTRUCTIONS PRESENT IN BORE OF DRILLING
BHA'S OR COMPLETION ASSEMBLIES. VISUALLY CHECK, OR DRIFT IF
REQUIRED.
ALWAYS DRIFT TUBULAR BEING PICKED UP WITH THE CORRECT SIZE DRIFT.
WHEN MAKING OR BREAKING BITS, BIT SUBS, SCRAPERS ETC. ENSURE YOU
HAVE ENOUGH WEIGHT ABOVE AND HAVE SLACKED OFF TO AVOID JUMPING

OUT OF BIT BREAKER OR SLIPS. ALSO USE AN AIR HOIST AS A BACK UP AND
KEEP IT IN TENSION UNTIL OPERATION IS COMPLETED.
ALWAYS STOP THE BLOCKS WHEN RUNNING DRILL COLLARS, HWDP, TUBING
AND SHORT STANDS OF DRILL PIPE. NEVER LATCH THESE ON THE RUN.
ASSISTANT DRILLER WILL PRE-PLAN AND RECORD ALL ID'S, OD'S, SERIAL NO'S,
FISHING NECKS AND THEIR OD'S AND LENGTHS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL ITEM.
MAKE A DRAWING OF ALL MULTI OD ITEMS COMPLETE WITH DIMENSIONS.

SHORT ASSEMBLIES SHOULD ONLY BE LIFTED WITH A WINCH LINE AND SWIVEL
SHACKLED TO A PROPERLY INSTALLED CERTIFIED LIFTING CAP.
LIFTING SUBS ARE ONLY FOR HANDLING DRILL COLLARS STANDS AND CERTAIN
B.H.A. SECTIONS, WITH DRILL PIPE ELEVATORS. THE EYES ON LIFTING SUBS ARE
ONLY FOR HANDLING OF THE SUB THEMSELVES.

FORETHOUGHT AND ADVANCED PREPARATION IS THE KEY TO THE
MINIMIZATION OF RISK WHEN HANDLING ABNORMAL ASSEMBLIES.
ADOPT THE METHOD LEAST PRONE TO RISK/FAILURE.
USE A BAR TO FIRMLY SEAT THE LIFTING PROTECTOR SHOULDER AGAINST THE
DRILL COLLAR/TUBULAR SHOULDER.
