Interim Report

Research Topic: Determination of optimum blast design parameters for Metekel project using bulk
emulsion.

Sub-topic: rock fragmentation theory

 Findings: Good rock fragmentation depends on the end use of rock and also the type and size
of equipment which is used for the subsequent handling of the rock.

o influential factors for rock fragmentation

 The geology of the rock (faults, voids etc.)
o Geological conditions such as rock strength, density, propagation
velocity, hardness and structure affect the size of fragmented rock and
could produce boulder fragmentation.
 Specific drilling
o describes the amount of drilling required in a round for the extraction
and breaking of one cubic meter of rock
o Higher specific drilling with smaller diameter blastholes distributes the
explosives better in the rock resulting in better rock fragmentation
 Specific charging
o Determines explosive consumption (kg/m3) in the final blast design.
o Rock will be broken up more if the specific charge is increased and the
drilling pattern maintained.
 Drilling pattern
o burden and spacing ratio
o reduce the risk of flyrock
 Firing pattern
o The delay time between blastholes and between rows has to be long
enough to create space for the blasted rock from the succeeding rows.
 Hole inclination
o Reduce the back break and the amount of boulders from the upper part
of the blast.
 Hole deviation
o Poor precision in drilling will form boulders due to irregular burdens and
spacing
 Size of the round
o Multiple row blasts give proportionally fewer boulders than single row
blasts.
