Automatic Blackboard Cleaner

This document describes an automatic blackboard cleaner created by students to save teachers time and effort when cleaning blackboards. It uses a rack and pinion system powered by a DC motor to convert rotational motion into linear motion of a duster along the blackboard. A vacuum system sucks up chalk dust through perforations in the duster casing. Limit switches reverse the motor's direction when the duster reaches the board edges to clean the entire surface automatically in a few minutes. The system aims to reduce human effort while maintaining classroom cleanliness.

ABSTRACT
This technique was selected by us by taking into
consideration some comfort for teachers while
cleaning the blackboard.so we decided to implement
our course study and with the help of electrical and
mechanical concept we made this project.
INTRODUCTION
q An automatic blackboard duster is a device that is generally
used to clean board automatically with the help of duster. By
the use of this automatic blackboard duster we can save
time and energy.
q A device for automatically erasing a blackboard wherein a
duster is mounted for longitudinal movement on the
blackboard and has a motor mounted thereon that is
mechanically interconnected to a drive assembly for
producing the movement of the duster in an erasing
operation.
q It will use the rack and pinion mechanism to convert the rotary
motion of motor into linear motion of pinion.

COMPONENTS

1-rack and pinion

A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a
pair of gears which convert rotational motion into linear
motion. A circular gear called "the pinion" engages teeth on a
linear "gear" bar called "the rack"; rotational motion applied to
the pinion causes the rack to move relative to the pinion,
thereby translating the rotational motion of the pinion into
linear motion.
2-Casing with Perforations
The casing is the most crucial part of the assembly.
It runs along the entire horizontal length of the
black board. The casing holds a vacuum chamber
within itself. The surface of the casing facing the
board, which holds the duster, has many
perforations which facilitate the suction of chalk
dust into the vacuum chamber. The back surface of
the casing has an opening which is connected to a
standard vacuum cleaner through a flexible hose.
3-Guideways
The casing is fixed vertically and the rack and pinion system is
fixed horizontally at the upper and lower part of blackboard
which is supported with the help of guideways. Limiting
switches are connected on the left and right corners. The
guide ways are provided with telescopic linear motion
bearings, which provide a low friction yet a steady movement
of the eraser. The guide ways are provided with limiting
switches at the right and left corners. These switches serve to
reverse polarity of the current supplied so that, the motor
reverses as the duster reaches top or bottom.
4-Vacuum Cleaner
A standard domestic purpose vacuum cleaner is used for the
purpose of sucking the chalk dust out of the eraser through
the vacuum chamber of the casing. Though operation is a bit
noisy, the fact that the cleaner need not be operated always
while the board is rubbed comes in handy. When the quality
of erasing decreases, due to saturation of chalk dust in the
foam, the vacuum cleaner shall be switched on to suck out the
dust. On an average the duster needs to be cleaned twice a
day at the most. This can be done during end of each class or
during breaks, which totally avoids noise during lecture hours.
5-DC Motor
A motor is used for driving the pinion. The limiting switches are
connected to the motor which rotates in reverse direction, on
reaching top or bottom extreme of the board. The motor is rigidly
fixed on to the wall above the black board using wooden block,
since any movement in the position of the motor disturbs the
meshing of pinion with the rack. A simple DC motor typically has a
stationary set of magnets in the stator and an armature with a
series of two or more windings of wire wrapped in insulated stack
slots around iron pole pieces (called stack teeth) with the ends of
the wires terminating on a commutator. The armature includes the
mounting bearings that keep it in the center of the motor and the
power shaft of the motor and the commutator connections.
6-Limiting Switches
They are used for controlling machinery as part of a control system,
as a safety interlocks, or to count objects passing a point. A limit
switch is an electromechanical device that consists of an actuator
mechanically linked to a set of contacts. When an object comes into
contact with the actuator, the device operates the contacts to make
or break an electrical connection.
Limit switches are used in a variety of applications and
environments because of their ruggedness, ease of installation, and
reliability of operation. They can determine the presence or absence,
passing, positioning, and end of travel of an object. They were first
used to define the limit of travel of an object; hence the name "Limit
Switch".

METHODOLOGY
The principle which we used in AUTOMATIC BLACKBOARD CLEANER
is that the rotating motion of the pinion is converted to the linear
motion of the rack and the duster is connected to the rack and is
attached to the blackboard horizontally.
q When power supply is given the DC motor supplies power to the
rack and pinion gear system and because of the rotation of
the pinion the rack starts the linear motion.
q The casing of the duster is connected via bearing to the pinion
q The limiting switches are responsible for reverse motion of the
motor to bring it back to the initial position.
q The casing of the duster is connected to a hose pipe
which is further connected to a suction pump which
will suck the chalk powder.
q Now, the limiting and the DPDT switches will change
the polarity and motor will revert back to the
original position and now the motion of the duster
will be in reverse direction.
CONCLUSION
In new era of technology, people want something new in their
life. They want every single thing they look in front of their life
look sophisticated. People want something that can improve
their lifestyle and help them to do their job by using the robot
or machine. That is why development of machine and robot is
now becomes quite popular and faster in marketing. So to help
and give benefit to humankind the research and development
of AUTOMATIC BLACKBOARD CLEANING SYSTEM is an
alternative machine that can help lecturer, teacher and
student to keep their board clean by using this machine.
