1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This procedure provides the requirements and acceptance standards for color contrast
(visible) liquid penetrant examination for detecting discontinuities which are open to the
surface on non porous metals and welding in these material.
1.2 This procedure is applicable to the solvent removable penetrant systems.
1.3 The materials, shapes, or sizes to be examined and the extent of the examination shall
be as specified by the Referencing Code Section, Drawing or NDE Map.
The user of this penetrant materials shall obtain certification of contaminant content for all
liquid penetrant materials used on Nickel Base Alloys, Austenitic or Duplex Stainless Steel,
and Titanium. When examining Nickel Base Alloys, the sulphur content shall not exceed 1%
of the residue by weight and when examining Austenitic or Duplex Stainless Steel and
Titanium, the total chlorine plus fluorine content shall not exceed 1% of the residue by weight.
These certifications shall include the penetrant manufacturer’s batch numbers and the test
results obtained in accordance with the above requirements. Intermixing of penetrant
materials from different families or different manufacturers is not permitted.

5.0 PROCEDURE
When procedure qualification is specified by the referencing Code Section, a change of a
requirement in Table 1 identified as an essential variable shall require re-qualification of the
written procedure by demonstration. A change of a requirement identified as a nonessential
variable does not require re-qualification of the written procedure. All changes of essential or
nonessential variables from those specified within the written procedure shall require revision
of, or an addendum to, the written procedure.

5.1.3 The remover listed in paragraph 4.0 shall be used for cleaning prior to the
penetrant examination.
A minimum of five (5) minutes shall be allowed before applying the developer.
5.6 Developing
5.6.1 Apply developer as soon as possible after penetrant removal and the part is
dry for all surfaces under examination. The time interval shall not exceed 5
(Five) minutes. It shall be applied by spraying.
5.6.2 Developing time for final interpretation begins immediately after a wet
developer coating is dry. The minimum developing time shall be as required
by Table 2.
5.7 Interpretation
5.7.1 Final interpretation shall be made within 10 to 60 minutes after the
requirement of Par. 5.6.2 are satisfied. If bleed-out does not alter the
examination results, longer periods are permitted.

5.7.2 Natural or artificial white light shall be used for examining indications. A
minimum light intensity of 100 fc (1000 lux) is required on the surface to
be examined to ensure adequate
5.7.3 sensitivity during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light
source, technique used, and light level verification is required to be
demonstrated one time, documented, and maintained on file.
5.7.4 Visible light meter shall be calibrated at least once a year or whenever the
meter has been repaired. If meters have not been in use for one year or
more, calibration shall be done before being used.
An indications of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that causes it; however,
the size of the indication is the basis for acceptance evaluation. Only indications with major
dimensions greater than 1/16” (1.5 mm) shall be considered relevant.
6.1 A linear indication is one having a length greater than three times the width.
6.2 A rounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with the length equal to or less
than three times the width.
6.3 Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be re-examined to determine whether or
not they are relevant.
Wash Tank Repair & Improvement Minas and Petapahan
These acceptance standards shall apply unless other more restrictive standards are specified
for specific materials or applications.
All surfaces to be examined shall be free of :
a. Relevant Linear indications;
b. Relevant Rounded Indications greater than 3/16 inches ( 5.0 mm ) ;
c. Four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by 1/16 inches (1.5 mm)
or less ( edge to edge ) ;
Post cleaning shall be conducted as soon as practical after Evaluation and Documentation
using a process that does not adversely affect the part.
