At the beginning of compression in a single stage, single acting reciprocating air compressor, the air
is at a pressure of 0.99 bar and a temperature of 15oC. The delivery valve opens at a pressure of
5.8 bar. The delivery temperature is 151oC. The bore diameter and stroke length are 0.28 and 0.30 m
respectively. The clearance volume is 5% of the swept volume and the compressor runs at 400 r.p.m.

a) Sketch the cycle on a pressure ~ volume diagram (2)


b) Determine EACH of the following
i) the index of compression 1.28 (4)
ii) the volumetric efficiency 85% (3)
iii) the indicated work per kg of air 178.4kJ (3)
iv) the free air capacity in m3/min, given that free air conditions are 1.013 bar and
25oC 6.35 m3/min (4)

850 mm and the stroke length is 1000mm. The clearance volume is 0.05 m3 and the index of
compression and expansion is 1.31. The mechanical efficiency is 89%. Suction pressure and
temperature are 1.02 bar and 27oC respectively. The compressor runs at 200 revs/min.

a) Determine for a delivery pressure of 8 bar, EACH of the following:

(i) the power input required 382 kW (7)


(ii) the rate of jacket cooling 58.3kW (3)

b) Explain why the mass flow rate of air alters as the delivery pressure rises. (2)
c) Determine the maximum delivery pressure which this compressor can achieve from the given

carried out in two stages with perfect intercooling. The stage pressure ratios are equal. The index of
compression and expansion is 1.27.

(b) In a two stage reciprocating air compressor, the LP suction pressure is 0.95 bar and the HP
delivery pressure is 11 bar. The LP suction temperature is 303 K. The index of compression
and expansion is 1.3. The intercooling is perfect, and the stage pressure ratios are in
geometric progression.

Determine EACH of the following


i) the indicated work per kg of air 246.1kJ/kg (4)
ii) the heat removed in the intercooler per kg of air 99.5kJ/kg (2)
iii) the work saved per kg of air by intercooling 40.2kJ/kg (3)
iv) the isothermal efficiencies, with and without intercooling 86.6% / 74.4% (3)

(b) the maximum pressure which can safely be achieved in a single stage 3.3 bar (2)
