1 System Requirements

1.1 Hardware Requirements

Minimum Hardware Requirements:


 CPU:2.00Ghz single core processor
 RAM: 256 MB
 Free disk space: 10 GB
 Display Adapter: 128M or higher, OpenGL version 1.5
Recommended Hardware Requirements:
 CPU:3.00Ghz dual core processor
 RAM: 2 GB or higher
 Free disk space: 40 GB or higher
 Display Adapter: 256M or higher, OpenGL version 2.0 or higher

1.2 Software Requirements

Operating Systems:
 Microsoft Windows XP (SP2 or higher)
 Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (SP1 or higher)
 Microsoft Windows Vista series
 Microsoft Windows Server 2008 series
 Microsoft Windows 7 series

Other Software Requirements:


 Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (Included in the installation package)

2 Install Software
2.1 Get Installation Package
You can get SuperMap iDesktop 8C installation package through:
 Purchasing SuperMap iDesktop 8C to get the installation disc containing the software
package.
 Apply a package from [email protected]

2.2 Install SuperMap iDesktop 8C


Before the installation, please make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements for
SuperMap iDesktop 8C.
 Insert the installation disc into the CD-ROM drive (e.g. G :), or unzip the installation
package, and then run setup.exe.
 Click Next.

 Read the license terms carefully and check the box before I accept the terms of the
license agreement. Click Next.
 Select a setup type from the two options: Complete and Custom. Click Next.
 Click Browse to change the destination folder, or you can keep the default destination
folder. Click Next.
 If you selected the Custom setup type, please select the features you want to install.
Click Next.
 Click Back to modify the settings made in the previous steps, or click Install to begin
installing SuperMap iDesktop 8C.
 SuperMap iDesktop 8C is being installed.
 If Visual Studio 2008 or its updated version such as Visual Studio 2010 and Visual
Studio 2011 has been installed in your system, the SuperMap iDesktop 8C
Registration/Unregistration dialog box will pop up for you to register SuperMap
Desktop Plugin templates into Visual Studio.
Note:
If you don’t have Visual Studio 2008 installed on your computer, the SuperMap iDesktop
8C Registration/Unregistration dialog box will not show up.
If your system have installed multiple versions of Visual Studio (currently, the platform only
supports for registering Visual Studio 2008, Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Studio 2011),
then all the versions of Visual Studio will be conducted the template registration of
SuperMap Desktop Plugin.
When SuperMap iDesktop 8C has been successfully installed, a Tools folder will be
generated under the installation directory. You can also run
SuperMap.Tools.RegisterTemplate.exe in the Tools folder to install SuperMap Desktop
Plugin templates into Visual Studio.

When Kaspersky antivirus software (or other antivirus software) is running on your
computer, SuperMap iDesktop 8C probably could not be installed correctly. You need
adding it into the trusted zone at first, and then run the installation program.
If you have installed SuperMap iDesktop 8C when Kaspersky is running, the help document
or icons may not be shown correctly.

2.3 Update
You can add or remove features from your SuperMap iDesktop 8C by accessing Control
Panel>Add or Delete Programs and clicking Change/Delete, or running the installation package
again. Besides, you can run service packs issued regularly to update your SuperMap iDesktop
8C.

2.4 Uninstall SuperMap iDesktop 8C


You can uninstall SuperMap iDesktop 8C through the Control Panel or the installation disc.
Note: The files generated when using SuperMap iDesktop 8C will not be automatically deleted.
You need to manually delete these files.

2.4.1 Uninstall through Control Panel


 Click Start>Control Panel.
 Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
 Click the Change or Remove Programs, and select SuperMap iDesktop 8C.
 Click Remove.

2.4.2 Uninstall through Installation Disc


 If you have installed SuperMap iDesktop 8C, insert the installation disc into the
CD-ROM drive (e.g. G :) and run setup.exe.
 Select Remove and click Next, then the message box below Shows up. Click Yes if you
are sure to you want to uninstall SuperMap iDesktop 8C.
 The SuperMap iDesktop 8C Registration/Unregistration dialog box pops up and
SuperMap Desktop Plugin templates are being uninstalled from Visual Studio 2008.
 SuperMap iDesktop 8C is being uninstalled.
 The software has been uninstalled successfully. Click Finish.

3 License Configuration
3.1 Get License
SuperMap GIS 8C products offer two types of licenses: a trial license and an official license, in
which the official license is classified as file license and hardware license.

3.1.1 Trial License


The trial license doesn’t need you to obtain initiatively, SuperMap GIS 8C products provides a
90-day trial license by default. You only need installing the SuperMap iDesktop 8C product, and
then it will start the 90-day trial license countdown. Every time you open SuperMap iDesktop, a
prompt about the available period of the license will be shown.

3.1.2 Official License
The official license is categorized in two types: file license and hardware license. The hardware
license is classified in two types: stand-alone encryption key and network encryption key.

3.1.2.1 File license


The file license is a legitimate software license accessed in the mode of offline or online, which
can be activated on your computer.
The file license is classified in two types: stand-alone file license and network file license.
The stand-alone file license can only activate the local computer, while the network file license
can activate all the computers in the current network. Note that the network key cannot be
converted into other computer after being activated on License Server.
Users must provide information about the local computer (or information about License
Server) to SuperMap in order to get the file license, which can be activated by configuration.

3.1.2.2 Hardware License


The hardware license is a legitimate software license accessed in the form of hardware encryption
key. Currently, SuperMap only provides SafeNet hardware encryption key, which is classified into
the following two types:
 Stand-alone encryption key
The stand-alone encryption key only provides one license, which must be installed on the
same computer with the SuperMap product. It has a green frosted skin.
 Network encryption key
The network encryption key can be installed on any computer in the network, which can
provide multiple licenses. The computer installed with the network key is called as “License
Server”. The clients in the network don’t need installing the driver of the license to use this
network key. It has a red frosted skin.

3.2 Deploy SuperMap License Center


SuperMap License Center is used to manage all the operations relating to SuperMap GIS 8C
products, including configuring license information, internal and external management of license
information, checking the license status and usage situation about the target machine.
The Tools folder of the SuperMap iDesktop 8C installation package contains SuperMap
License Center. Before configuring the license, you need to run the trial.bat file under the
Tools\SuperMapLicenseCenter\Tools folder to finish the deployment of SuperMap License
Center.

3.3 Configure License

3.3.1 Configure File license


SuperMap License Center provides the software activation method to configure the file license.
User gets information about local machine through SuperMap License Center, and then submit the
information to SuperMap for accessing the official license, and then the official license is updated
into the local machine so as to finish the deployment of the license. The procedures to activate
software as follows:
 Generate information about the local machine
Open the main page of SuperMap License Center, and then click “Generate information
about the local machine” to generate a file named *.c2v in the specified path.

 Submit information about the local machine to SuperMap
Submit the *.c2v file into SuperMap, and then SuperMap will generate an official license
named *.v2c according to the *.c2v file and return it to you.
 Enable the license
Open the “License Update” page on the SuperMap License Center as shown in the figure
below, specify the *.v2c file into at “File Location”, and then click “Update” to activate the
license.

3.3.2 Configure Hardware license
For the Window OS, SuperMap GIS 8C products can be operated correctly, even if the
stand-alone key or the network key doesn’t install the driver application; the license server of the
network key needs installing the license driver.
If a network segment in the current network environment has configured an available license
server, then the license will be automatically accessed and configured; if other network segment
has available license server, please configure the license according to the following procedures:
 Open the “Settings” page of SuperMap License Center
 Input IP or name of the license server at “Terminal License”, and then click “Apply”
 The default connection port of the license is 1947, if the port has been occupied, other
unoccupied port can be set at “License Connect Port”, and then click “Apply”

For the license status and the usage situation, please refers to 3.4.1 Check the License Status.
Note:
After the hardware license is inserted into your computer, the signal light is lighten
denotes the key is available.
For the windows OS, after the hardware license is inserted into your computer, it will be
treated as a USB device and can be run directly.
If one computer has the two types of hardware licenses, the stand-alone key is preferred.
If the virtual machine uses the hardware license, you need to set up the virtual machine
software so as to connect the hardware license with the virtual machine.

3.4 Manage License
User can manage the license service by SuperMap License Center, including checking the license
status, checking the usage situation, updating the license, etc.

3.4.1 Check the License


The “License” page of SuperMap License Center displays the license information about the
SuperMap GIS 8C products. The organization of the information is classified according to the
products. Each record corresponds to a license module of the product.
Each license module records the detailed license information, in which the specific meaning
of each field is as follows:
 Name: The name of the module.
 Type: Shows whether the license is a trail license or an official license.
 Available Time: Shows the number of the remaining available days.
 Usage: Shows the current status of the module.
 Emigration: Shows the number of emigrations.

3.4.2 Check Connection


The “Connection” page of SuperMap License Center displays the detailed usage information of
license module of all the SuperMap GIS 8C products on the target machine, in which each record
corresponds to a license module of the product.

The specific meaning of each field is as follows:
 ID: The ID value of the license module.
 Module: Name of the module.
 Address: Location of the license module, if it is originated form the local machine, then
“Local” will be displayed, otherwise its IP address will be displayed.
 User: The username and computer name of the computer where the license module
exists.
 Process: Displays the usage process of the current license module.
 Time: The connected time of the current license module.

3.4.3 Update License


The “Update” page of SuperMap License Center is used for updating the license. After the official
license (*.v2c) is accessed, you need configure the license of the local machine in the way of
updating license. User needs updating the license in the following situations:
 When obtaining an official license (*.v2c), you need configure the license of the local
machine in the way of updating license.
 When obtaining an emigrated license (*.h2r) from the other machine with an official
license, you need configure the license to the local machine in the way of updating
license.
 When returning the license emigrated from other machine, you need updating the
license to return it.
Specific update operations:
Open the “Update” page of SuperMap License Center, and specify the three target files at the
“File Location”, and then click Refresh.

4 Installation Directory

Below shows the installation directory structure of SuperMap iDesktop 8C:

 Bin: Contains all plugins that will be loaded when SuperMap iDesktop 8C is started, the
startup items, runtime libraries and resource files. In the Bin folder, there is a folder named
Plugins, in which each subfolder corresponds to a plugin and contains the assembly (.dll)
implementing the plugin functions.
 Configuration: Contains configuration files, including SuperMap.Desktop.Startup.xml used
for the configuration of splash screen, work environment and program options, and
SuperMap.Desktop.RescentFile.xml used for configuring recent file list.
 FrameData: Contains the default framework data that will be loaded to a scene, including
global image data, global terrain data and global vector data.
 GettingStarted: Provides a quick start tutorial for SuperMap iDesktop 8C in *.chm format.
 Help: Provides SuperMap iDesktop 8C help system.
 Resources: Contains resource files of the application program.
 SampleCode: Provides sample projects for extension development.
 SampleData: Provides sample data used for demonstration.
 Support: Provides installation packages for .NET Framework 4.0, Microsoft Chart Controls
for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008.
 Templates: Contains all templates provided in SuperMap iDesktop 8C, such as color scheme
templates, thematic map templates, and custom templates.
 Tools: Provides RegisterTemplate.exe for registering SuperMap Desktop Plugin templates
into Visual Studio 2008. This folder also contains programs required for SuperMap iDesktop
8C installation.
 WorkEnvironment: Stores work environments. Each subfolder in the folder corresponds to a
work environment and any work environment is made up of plugin configuration files.
 InstallationGuide.pdf: The doc that guides you through installing the software.

 License.txt: The license agreement of SuperMap iDesktop 8C.
 Readme.htm: Introduces system requirements for SuperMap iDesktop 8C and other
descriptive information.
 What_is_new.htm: New features for the current version.
 What's SuperMap iDesktop 8C.htm: Introduces product information.

5 FAQ

Q: What requirements do I have to meet when configuring license in Windows Vista or


Windows 7?

A: Please note that if your operating system is Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need to run
SuperMap License Manager as administrator or turn off UAC before license configuration.

Q: Why doesn't the SuperMap Desktop Plugin item appear in the Templates list when
creating a project in Visual Studio?

A: If you cannot find the SuperMap Desktop Plugin template in the Templates list when

creating a project via Visual Studio, that is because SuperMap plugin templates were not

registered properly. To solve the problem, go to SuperMap iDesktop 8C\Tools and run

registerTemplate.exe to register the templates. Then restart Visual Studio to create a

project, you will see SuperMap Desktop Plugin listed in the templates list.

Q: Why can't I install SuperMap GIS 8C properly when I have Kaspersky antivirus
software running on my computer?

A: You may fail to install SuperMap GIS 8C desktop products when the Kaspersky antivirus

software is running on your computer. In this situation, you need to add the setup program

to the Kaspersky trusted zone, and then run it to install the product.

Q: Why can't I see the SuperMap GIS 8C desktop icons and use the help docs properly
when I have Kaspersky antivirus software running on my computer?

A: You may not be able to display the desktop icon or use the help doc when the Kaspersky
antivirus software is running on your computer. In this situation, you need to manually
unzip the Resources.rar file under the installation directory and the WebHelp.rar file in the
Help folder under the installation directory.
