1. Drug Basket Method – in this system, the night nurse checks the medicine closet, utility room
and drug refrigerator inventory of supplies against a master list provided by the pharmacy. The
nurse then checks the needed number of required drug on the floor stock supply. When there is
an empty container, she places it in the drug basket. Once completed the drug basket is then
sent to the pharmacy. The pharmacy staff will fill each container and dispense the requested
ampules and vials as ordered first thing in the morning. Once basket is completed it is delivered
backed to the floor.
2. Mobile dispensing unit – utilizes a specially constructed stainless steel truck measuring 60 inches
high, 48 inches wide and 251/2 inches deep. The main body of the truck is mounted on six 8-inch
balloon tires. The main compartment is provided with two locking sliding doors, a handle for
steering and pushing, a heavy duty steel and rubber protective bumper and a 2-inch rim on top
to permit carrying empty containers being returned to the pharmacy. The pharmacist or PA
manning the mobile unit will inventory the drug cabinets and check off the items and quantity of
supplies left.
3. Mechanical dispensing – a machine is arranged to dispense a maximum of 8 packages of 96
different items. The pharmacist places the capsules, tablets or ampules into a cardboard box,
which is sized to fit the unit, prepares a pre-packaged units into bins in the pharmacy dispensing
area, loads them to the machine.
4. Unit dose dispensing - medications are ordered, packed, handled administered and charged in
multiples of single dose units containing a predetermined amount of drug or supply sufficient
for one regular dose. A single unit package is one which contains one complete pharmaceutical
dosage forms.
5. Envelope system – envelopes are used to dispense drugs to the nursing station and also used as
charge ticket. The pharmacist fill pre-labeled envelopes with the specific drugs and places a
predetermined quantity on the nursing unit. After administration of the drug to the patient, the
nurse places the patients name and room number on the envelope and places it in her out
basket. It is later delivered to the pharmacy where it is priced and forwarded to accounting.
