What is Your Immunity?
Dinanath Das, an American who became a Hare Krishna Monk, came to our
Ayushakti clinic in Mumbai for detoxification. He suffered from low immune
symptom. Five to six times a year, he developed infections.

On checking his pulse, we found that his metabolism was sluggish. The Ojas
(immune reserve) was very low. Ojas is the nectar of the body’s metabolic cycle when
all the tissues are nourished properly. The final nectar remains in the form of Ojas.

you have digested through metabolism, then your bodily tissues don’t get regenerated.

the relationship is the biggest killer of our Agni – the force behind digestion and
metabolism.

1. Stress
Whenever there is a relationship problem, it immediately gives us emotional stress.
Pressure at work can also give us both mental and physical stress.

2. Not digesting food


Eating the wrong food or eating when you have no appetite, regularly eating heavy
food like fried food, wheat, pork and red meat, depletes our digestive enzymes. When
our is sluggish, the food remains half digested. This half digested mass sometimes
gets released through the stool, but mostly stays right in the body. It decays, putrefies
and converts into extremely sticky, toxic mucus known as Aama.

This Aama is a major blocker: it blocks the subtle energy channels, it blocks the
process of metabolism and absorption of nutrients and finally, it depletes our immune
system.

3. Eating junk food and canned food


Junk food and canned food lose their vital energy because of over processing and
preservation. Thus, they have hardly any nutritional value or vital energy known as
Prana. Such food is unable to nourish our tissues and the immune system.

4. Over exposure to antibiotics

When you take antibiotics frequently, you do not allow your body to produce the
fighting mechanism against outside disease. For this reason, one must be extremely

3. Immune Builder Herbs

ANOTHER REAL LIFE STORY

John was a very successful businessman from London. For some reason, he had gone to
Africa and while there, he met with an accident. It was a major accident, he lost a lot of
blood and he was given a blood transfusion. When he got back to London, suddenly he
felt a big cough and cold. For 15 days, one-month, the cough and cold does not go away.
Then a fever starts and he starts losing weight. The doctors were checking but they’re not
able to find anything – until one day they test for HIV and they discover that John is HIV
positive. His immunity, instead of being 800, is 400. It was a huge shock for him, because
he was very clear that he had never taken any drugs. Then suddenly he realized, “My God,
I had that blood transfusion in Africa!”

He started going for different information – books, doctors, specialists and more from the
Internet. Meanwhile, his immunity went down even more, to 200. His legs started

shaking, the fear was increasing. He becomes nervous, big anxiety, big depression and he
doesn’t know what to do. So he goes for more information, to many, many specialists and
they tell him that he is going to die.

After 11 more months in 1994, he goes to a big London hospital and they tell him now
your immunity is 4. He can no longer walk. There are a lot of dark circles, he is not able to
even stand properly, he is shivering, has cough and cold, a high fever is there, and then he
is admitted to the hospital. They say your immunity is zero, you need to make a will, you
are not going to survive more than six weeks.

Suddenly, I am there in London and somebody gives him my name. With the grace of
God and two people to help him, he comes to our clinic. From taking his pulse, I see that
it is low ojas – low ojas is a certain pulse in the body. His marma of low ojas, low
immunity is so low that right away, I began pressing the marma point for that. After 15
minutes, he says, “I feel a little better, but you know, I am going to die. I have no choice.”

I said, “Who tells you that you are going to die?” He says, “See, the Internet says,
computer says, specialist says, everybody says, so I have to die.”

Whatever he was programmed, whatever he was told, he started feeling in his body. You
feel dryness in the mouth, you can’t walk, you have burning in the urine, this happens,
giddiness, fever, cough and cold, everything is happening. Now, what do we do?

We give him herbal preparations, we give him a diet, lifestyle guidance, a little Ayurvedic
treatment called shirodhara, and marma. Marma are the subtle energy points which talks
to subconscious mind.

After three months, he gives me a letter saying I am leaving and he wants me to know that
his immunity is 100. After another six months, he sends me a letter saying, “I am still
living, and my immunity is 400.” In 2001, he came to see me in Bologna, Italy and now his
immunity is 900 plus.

His is not the only case. We have more than a thousand like this, people whose immunity
is 900 plus. The doctors in London say. “We don’t understand what is happening but your
immunity is more than mine! Because his was 750.”

• Soak all of this, except the ghee, over night.

• Peel the cardamom and almonds.
• Add half a glass of water and ghee.
• Blend all of this in to a mixture to prepare a drink.
• Drink it after your morning tea or coffee.
• If you do not have a blender, then chew everything well until it turns
liquid in the mouth.
• You can also add 2 tablespoon of water instead of a half glass and make a
paste. Then use this paste like a spread for bread or eat by itself.
• You can also add milk instead of water.

This combination of breakfast will keep your energy high throughout


the day. Dates and almonds provide strength and nutrients. Fennel
and cardamom aid in digestion. Later, you should have a normal
breakfast only if you are really hungry.

b. Drink juices to vitalize your immunities.

Fresh juices are like a miracle to vitalize your immune system. They get absorbed
quickly and they are full of prana & vital nutrients. When you eat raw food, then it
is difficult to digest and produces too much Vata (air element in Ayurveda). Too
much Vata, normally being catabolic in nature, damages the immune system.

A Story
How To Increase Your Immunity From 0 to 800
by Dr. Pankaj Naram

This is the true story of a man I met – I will call him Sunil. Sunil was in Africa for many years
and while there, he had a bad car accident. He lost a lot of blood and to save his life, he was
given transfusions. Next he went to London and suddenly, Sunil found that his body was
becoming weaker; he couldn’t even walk. He couldn’t breathe properly and became very
anxious. Because of his weakness, he was hospitalized and the doctors told him, “You have
got HIV (AIDS) and your immunity is very low.” The normal immunity should be around
700%, but his was close to 100%. This was a highly alarming situation.

Sunil was a very brilliant person so he went to the Internet to learn more about HIV. As he
did so, he became even more nervous and his immunity plunged to 50 and he could no longer
walk.

Around that time, someone told him that Dr. Naram had come to London. This all happened
18 years ago. The day before he saw me, Sunil went back to the hospital to find out that his
immunity was now zero. They told him, “Now you must prepare for your death. You might
live for next 14 – 15 days maximum.”

When I saw Sunil, he started weeping. This was in 1987 – 16- 17 years ago. Today Sunil’s
immunity is 900 +. That is one thing. In only 360 days, his immunity came up to 800. This
news came as a huge shock for the hospital in Great Britain. Sunil must have sent me in last
18 years, more than 600 people, from all over the world.

He asked me not to disclose his name – this man with the magical results in only 360 days.
He was a person who could not walk, who had become very dark, had no energy, no
enthusiasm, his liver was not working, his digestion had stopped, his circulation – nothing.
His body was racked with pain and deteriorating. In only 360 days, his immunity went up
800%.

Four years ago, I came to see Dr. Naram to help me with chronic depression,
anxiety, fear, phobias, indecisiveness, and agoraphobia (fear of leaving the house)
and low self-confidence. I had been to many psychotherapists and psychologists,

What Is Stress?
Stress is commonly described as, “An unpleasant emotional state or uneasiness
and feeling of impending doom – although there is no obvious threat.” Stress is
characterized by feelings of apprehension and worry.

According to Ayurveda, stress and anxiety are classic signs of an existing


imbalance in the body. Prolonged anxiety, stress and tension powerfully affect
the nervous system, resulting in chronic exhaustion. Complications such as high
blood pressure, headaches, nausea, indigestion, heartburn, ulcers, excess
sweating, skin dryness, rashes, frequent urination, diarrhea, shortness of breath,
panic, chest pains, tingling and palpitation, asthma, and tiredness that comes
upon you rapidly for no reason.

When the body is under constant stress, it constantly manufactures increased
quantities of stress chemicals – particularly Cortisol – that depress the immune
system. Stress can also be damaging to the brain, leading to premature brain cell
aging.

A weakened AGNI (digestive fire) is another by-product of stress and causes


indigestion, which in turn creates a semi-metabolized mass that remains in the
large intestine where it begins to decay and putrefy. This toxic mucus is called
AAM, and it moves throughout the circulatory system of the blood and blocks
many channels within the body. If this toxic mass blocks the circulatory system,
it can lead to arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, or an infarction in the heart or brain.
If it blocks the respiratory channel, it results in asthma, bronchitis or sinusitis.
When it blocks the mental channels, it causes confusion, fear, excessive worry,
lack of focus and irritability. Emotionally, it leads to sadness and over sensitivity.

AGNI digests everything we eat and transforms our food into various tissues.
When the AGNI is very weak, digestion and metabolism become sluggish, and
the tissues remain undernourished. The tissue type, or Dhatu, can be Rasa
(Plasma), Rakta (Blood), Mansa (Muscles), Meda (Adipose), Asthi (bone tissue),
Majja (Bone Marrow), or Shukra (regenerative tissue).

This metabolic system generates a nectarean residue, known as ‘OJAS’ that


protects the immune system. Well-nourished dhatus and Ojas create a physically
healthy body, mind and emotions. When nourished properly, this Rasa Dhatu
and Ojas increases zeal, courage, reduces fear and eliminates complaints about
life. Our perspective of our own life then grows more positive and offers us many
possibilities instead. This also provides the necessary strength with which to
handle shock, terror and grief.

When the Rasa (Plasma) tissues are well nourished, your mind and emotions
create zeal and feeling of contentment, satisfaction. Your mind generates
happiness, positive thinking, faith, courage, enthusiasm and strength.

Levels of Stress
When treating stress through Ayurveda, we look at these 4 areas:

Consciousness: Excessive preoccupation with threatening people or


situations, obsessing about an upsetting event, unstoppable pangs of emotions
(loss, anger, jealously, guilt, longing etc), excessive vigilance, startled reactions,
insomnia and bad dreams, aches and pains and other unwanted sensations.
Solution: All these can be relieved by meditation.

Physiology: Tightening of the muscles or aching, restlessness, pain and upset
stomach, unsteadiness of the hands, nervous tics as in the eyelid, touching yourself
repeatedly, clearing your throat, high blood pressure, frequent cold sweating, skin
problems or itching, stiff posture, holding things tightly, strong startled response,
headaches, ulcers, heart disease, colitis, hemorrhoids, rashes, diarrhea, or frequent
urination. These are some of the more common and obvious stress-related
disorders.
Solution: Such imbalances in physiology are addressed by dietary changes that
include avoiding stimulants and eating an individually suited, balanced diet.

Behavior: Hyperactivity, walking or talking faster than normal, a feeling of


constantly being in a hurry, irritation or impatience with delays, panic, blushing,
getting tongue-tied, avoiding people, nervous habits (such as drumming one’s
fingers, eating, smoking or drinking), changing habits (becoming less or more
organized), poor memory, confusion, stumbling over words, inattentiveness,
excessive worry, preoccupation with a certain situation, holding grudges,
irritability, crying, obsessive thoughts & compulsive actions and emotional
outbursts.
Solution: Behavioral modification involves adhering to a daily routine and an
organized lifestyle, including regular hours for work, sleep and meals.

Environment: A stressful person shows a general lack of interest in his/her


environment.
Solution: A suitable environment is created through music, aromatherapy etc.
to soothe and balance the individual’s constitution – giving a cleaner and more
restful living space.

More Tips on How You Can Face Stress


1. Close your eyes and observe your breath for 10 minutes in the morning
2. Take one teaspoon or ghee every morning with hot milk or tea on an
empty stomach
3. Drink half a glass of white pumpkin juice every day with one teaspoon of
Crystal sugar. It will cool down flared anger and hatred.
4. Always communicate and complete with any person with whom you are
angry. Avoid emotional outbursts and if they occur, jot down the points
about the issue. While communicating, refer to the points you have noted.
By doing this simple practice, you will begin to communicate effectively
without emotional disturbances.

7 Golden Steps to Fight Stress

1) A Diet that Nourishes the Body, Mind & Emotions


Your diet needs to be a mixture of foods that increases both RASA Dhatu & OJAS,
while at the same time reducing VATA and AAM.
FOODS TO AVOID: Dried fruits (soak first to reduce their Vata-increasing
effect), rabbit meat, mushroom, apples, watermelons, raw vegetables, salads,
cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, raw onions, peas, capsicum, potatoes, tomatoes,
barley, corn, red meat, all heavy beans like chickpeas, kidney beans, black eye
beans, dry peas, white sugar, wheat, meat, sweets, fried foods & fermented foods
FOOD TO CONSUME MORE OF: Milk, buttermilk, oranges, berries,
pomegranates, passion fruit, cherries, raw cane sugar, cumin, grapes, millet,
cotton seed oil, soybean oil, ghee, garlic, cumin, butter, sweet fruits like bananas,
coconuts, figs, dates, grapes, melons, papayas, cooked vegetables, beetroot,
carrot, garlic, french beans, cooked onion, cooked ladies fingers, sweet potatoes,
all kinds of squashes and pumpkin like ridge gourd, bottle gourd, snake gourd,
red and white pumpkin, cooked rice and eggs, aloe vera, asparagus, green
dandelion, cantaloupe, mung beans, yellow dal, oranges and yellow lentils &
masoor dal

All nuts are all right in moderate quantities as is jaggery (unrefined sugar
available in Indian grocery stores), honey, palm sugar and ghee (purified butter
also available in health and Indian shops). All kinds of oils are permitted in
moderate quantity. Vegetables juices, chicken, turkey and sea foods are permitted
in moderate quantities.

2. Lifestyle
Practice Shavasan (Hatha Yoga posture that involves lying on the floor with legs
spread apart & arms outstretched at your sides while you totally relax every
muscle and breathe deeply) and Pranayam (slow and pronounced yogic breathing
that should be taught by a certified instructor) regularly.
3. Home Remedies
a. Apply ghee on your temples
b. Take one tablespoon of ghee in the morning on an empty stomach with
warm water or herbal tea.
c. Take one teaspoon of Brahmi (Centella Asiatica) powder (available in
health and Indian stores) twice a day. Brahmi has the power to gradually
reduce the production of stress chemicals in the body – especially
Cortisol. Thus it increases and reinstates your body’s natural immunity.
d. Soak 20 raisins in water for 3 hours. Crush and drink the juice.

e. Beneficial Mixture of Common Kitchen Herbs & Food
Cumin seed powder 1 tsp
Fennel seed powder ½ tsp.
Rose petals 20
Coriander seed powder 1 tsp.
Raw cane sugar 1 tsp.
Water 1 glass

Boil the above mixture and keep it covered for 20 minutes. Filter and drink.

4. Secret MARMA POINT to Release Stress


Marma techniques are powerful if done in a specific manner and with great focus.
These subtle energy points can create a powerful impact on human health. The
use of Marma techniques can remove local blocks, reduce symptoms instantly
and nourish tissues.

* PICHU on the heart: The heart is a major MARMA point that helps
relax all emotional imbalances. Soak a pack of cotton in warm ghee and
sesame oil. Apply the pack daily for ten to fifteen minutes on the chest
around the heart region

in a day.

5. PANCHAKARMA
• Panchakarma is a purificatory process and one of the traditional limbs of
Ayurveda treatment. What happens? ‘Panchakarma’ means ‘five
therapies’; this in-depth Ayurvedic treatment completely cleanses the
body, mind and emotions of toxins and rejuvenates it. There are 5
therapies used for elimination of excessive doshas; these treatments purify
all 3 doshas and all the subtle channels in the body. Ideally, the treatment

It is very important to cultivate certain ways of thinking and acting, as these will
likely to lead to fulfillment and positive mental health. The following steps paint a

picture of the ideal situation that we are all working towards in creating an easeful

7. Physical activity
Light physical exercise naturally increases the body’s cellular activities and thus
strengthens the immune system. Exercising regularly will also help prevent illness
and disease. You can think of it as relaxation therapy!
1. Start with your arms by your sides, and gently stretch upwards. Stretch your
arms up as high as you can.
2. Stretch your right arm and bend it to the left as far as possible. Hold this
position for a minute. Then repeat with your left arm. This tones the
muscles on the side of your body.
3. Straighten one leg and bend the other (as low as possible) to tone inner
thigh muscles. Repeat the same with your other leg.
4. Step back with one foot, keep your leg straight, and bend your front knee to
tone your calves.
5. Tone back and leg muscles by touching your toes.

Physical activities that can be performed without a break for at least 12 minutes
such as cycling, or jogging are call aerobic exercise. This is the best type of
activity for increasing general levels of fitness – particularly the performance of
the heart, lungs and muscles.

Emotional Support
Your normal behavior is based on the picture or mental map you have of your own
personal world. If a major change occurs in your life, such as getting married, or
the death of a loved one or someone close – a parent, child, or partner – it means
you have to rearrange the map or rewire your internal circuits.

As you adjust to such change, you can expect to experience feelings of loss, grief
and remorse abut the past and what you are letting go of, as well as uncertainty
and self-doubt about the unknown future.

To cope with a major change in your life, you must be prepared to replace old

stability, as the normal course of life, you are less likely to be adversely affected
by stressful life events. It’s also likely that the more changes you have had to cope
with in the past, the more confident you will be at coping with changes in the

As you may remember, I’ve had severe neck and shoulder pain since 1995, including
severe swelling at the shoulder. After taking the herbs you prescribed for only one month, the
debilitating pain was greatly reduced and the swelling stopped. I have movement in my arm again
and can now raise it nearly straight up in the air!
Some time in the second month, while I was meditating, I heard a loud sound as though

7 Secret Steps to help you reduce risk of
Arthritis at any age

1. One tsp. of Castor Oil every other day after the age of 50. If there is already joint trouble, then
take it every day.

2. Avoid heavy beans, wheat, fried food, red meat, and raw vegetables. Replace eating raw
vegetables by drinking fresh juice made from salads, vegetables and fruits.

3. Take an Enema of following ingredients once a week after the age of 50:
1 teaspoon Ginger powder
1 tsp. Cumin seed powder
½ clove of garlic - crushed
1 pinch Asafoetida
1 tsp. fenugreek seed
150 ml water
• Boil every thing for 2 to 3 minutes and filter.
• Add water to make 100 ml. if needed.
• Add 1-tablespoon castor oil and one teaspoon sesame seed oil to this warm
decoction.
• When it is lukewarm, take an enema of this mixture.
• If you cannot do the enema once a week, even taking it once a month can help
prevent or neutralize the initial symptoms of arthritis.

4. It’s best to eat a VATA PACIFYING DIET (please see below)


In addition, take at least two tablespoons of sesame seeds in the form of Tahini or crushed
sesame powder per day. This will fulfill your daily Calcium requirement.

5. If you do have symptoms of Aama (toxicity), fasting on MUNG BEAN SOUP for 3 to 5 days
will help. The health effects of this soup are miraculous! Spice this soup with ginger,
coriander and cumin and watch the changes in your body, mind and emotions!

Green Mungbean Soup Recipe


Serves: 4
Ingredients:
1 cup green mung beans - soaked overnight
2 cup water + 1 tsp. salt- to cook beans in pressure cooker
2 cup water - to achieve the soup
1 tbs. sunflower oil
½ tsp. mustard seeds
¼ tsp. Hing (known as Asofoetida in the West)
1 bay leaf (Tejpatta)
½ tsp. turmeric

1 tsp. mixed Cumin and Coriander Powder
1½ tsp. ginger - chopped
½ tsp. garlic - chopped
2 tsp. salt
1½ tsp. lemon juice (optional)1 tsp. raw sugar cane
1 pinch garam masala powder
Preparation Time: 45 minutes
1) Soak the mung beans overnight in water.
2) Clean and finely grind ginger and garlic
3) Drain the mung beans, wash them two times and cook in a pressure cooker with the indicated
amount of water until tender. It takes around 25 minutes, according to your pressure cooker. The
beans have to be broken.
4) Heat the oil in large deep saucepan and add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds pop, add
Hing (Asafoetida) and bay leaf. Mix well.
5) Place the cooked beans - including the cooked water plus fresh water - into the saucepan.
6) Bring to a boil and add all remaining spices. Simmer the mung beans for a few minutes more.

1. Take one teaspoon of Castor Oil every night with Warm Ginger Tea.
2. Eat lots of Calcium-boosting foods in your diet.
3. Take oil with your meals. The best to use are Olive and Sesame oil.
4. Boil one potato chopped with its skin every morning in two cups of water. Reduce the
water to one cup, filter it and drink with half a teaspoon of whole fenugreek seeds.
(Fenugreek is optional).
5. Pour warm sesame oil on your larger joints -- especially the hip, knee, ankles, wrist and
cervical and lumbar spine at least once in 15 days.
6. Make sure that, Vata and Aama are not produced. Eat sensibly and you will feel better!

Enjoy Occasionally (twice a week)


Turkey, Chicken or Lamb, Eggs, Seafood, Cooked Vegetables like Cauliflower, Broccoli, Sprouts and
Cabbage, Soaked Nuts and Nut Butter.

Vata Pacifying Diet


These foods pacify or reduce VATA Dosha and it’s best to TAKE MORE of them:
Sweet Fruits such as Bananas, Coconut, Figs, Dates, Grapes, Melon, Papaya, Cooked
Vegetables, Beets, Carrots, Okra, Garlic, French Beans, Cooked Onion, Sweet Potato,
all kinds of Squashes and Pumpkin like Ridge Gourd, Bottle Gourd, Snake Gourd, Red
and White Pumpkin, Cooked Rice and Wheat, White Meat, Eggs, Sea Food, Mung
Beans, Yellow Dal, Orange and Yellow Lentils, and Masoor Dal. Spices like Black
Pepper, Cinnamon, Clove, Garlic, Ginger, Cumin, Coriander, and Asafoetida are
excellent. You can eat all Nuts in moderate quantities. Jaggery (natural, unrefined
sugar available in Indian grocery stores), Honey, Palm Sugar, Unrefined Sugar, Ghee,
Butter and Milk (especially skimmed milk powder – 100 grams equals1370 mgs of
calcium) pacify Vata. We recommend consumption of oils in moderate quantities.

A Few More Proven Tips…
o It’s best to avoid heavy, stale, gassy and indigestible food. Eat more soupy foods and cooked
vegetables rather than raw. Cooked vegetables are definitely your friends!
o Your diet should contain more warm and light foods made with spices like:
Garlic, Ginger, Ajwain, Cumin, Coriander, and Asafoetida (Hing).
o All your food should contain a moderate amount of Oil or Ghee.

REMEMBER!
o Plain boiled food without Oil also causes excess Vata.
o Chilled water, cold drinks, cold milk, curd, ice creams, if eaten regularly, increases Vata and can
decrease the digestive power, finally causing toxins
o Excessive fasting also increases Vata.

Other lifestyle causes that may contribute to arthritis include: over exertion, frequent late nights,
worries, grief and fear. One thing to be very aware of – make sure that AAMA (toxins) are not produced if
you are experiencing Arthritis conditions!

What Causes Arthritis?


In Ayurveda it’s a known fact that as we grow older, especially after the age of 40, the VATA Dosha
increases. Actually, Arthritis also affects people in all age groups, including 300,000 children. Half of the
70 million adults with Arthritis in America don’t think that anything can be done to help them. But this is
not true! When this VATA or Air Element becomes blocked into our joints, it can be very painful. Did
you know that ‘Arthritis’ refers to more than 100 different diseases that affect areas in or around joints?

Ayurveda says that Arthritis begins due to a weak AGNI (digestive power) and excess AAM (toxins) and
VATA. Excess VATA takes the toxins and PITTA (Fire Element) from the colon and deposits them in
your joints. The combination of AAM and PITTA produce swelling that are like balloons filled with
water. There may also be a burning sensation because the mucus membranes that normally prevents your
joints from rubbing each other when you move about change. Eventually, VATA even causes deformity
in our joints. Many breakthrough remedies in Ayurveda for Arthritis have to do with reducing VATA –
the Air Element.

What is Fat
And How Is It Created?
Fatty tissues are extremely essential for the body as they give good complexion, a
high-pitched voice, magnetic eyes, good quality of lips and soft and shining
complexion. They also give stability to the body.

Ayurveda believes that after the food is digested and nourishment absorbed in
the body, it gets converted into different tissues through our metabolic Agni.
Metabolic Agni is manifested into different enzymes and hormones that
participate in the metabolic process and regenerate our tissues.

There are basically 7 main tissues known as Sapta Dhatu that are nourished
in this process. Each of these tissues has impact on many, many sub- tissues and
also impacts the emotional and spiritual being within us.

Fatty tissue, when in a balanced state, creates extremely stable emotions. You
become a loving and happy person. You become generous and help others and
naturally enjoy wealth, power, enjoyment, charity, simplicity and happiness.

Fatty tissue in the cycle of metabolism is created after the muscle tissue is
nourished and fatty tissue nourishes bony tissue.

Fat is an oily, smooth, heavy, thick liquid, soft yellow color, and contains the sub-
earth and water elements. It is lubricating and gives stability. And the sub-
tissues are the tendons. Ayurveda calls fat tissue Meda Dhatu.

A Successful 4000 Year-Old Rule


For Losing Your Fat
Eating too much oily food and fatty food without much exercise depletes your
digestive and metabolic Agni. When the metabolic enzymes do not function
normally, then some tissues are over-nourished and some remain under-
nourished. Thus, fatty tissues get over nourished and finally, we start becoming
obese.

From our experience of handling more than 60,000 obese people, and from the
traditional wisdoms that we received from our Guru, here are some basic rules
for losing your fat:

a. Eat at least 50% protein diet in your meals such as tofu, mung, lentils, fish etc.
b. Completely avoid fatty food like fried foods, butter, meat, pork etc.
c. Drink 3-5 glasses per day of warm ginger water.
d. Have at least one meal of only Mung Soup or thick pureed Mung Soup.
e. Avoid Aama-increasing food like wheat, cheese, fried food and meat.
f. Females should avoid yogurt as yogurts blocks the channels and creates water
retention.
g. Cereals and legumes should be eaten only twice a day. Other times, whenever
you are hungry, eat boiled vegetables, fresh juices, and fruits. This will satisfy
your belly and burn your fat.
h. Take at least 60 grams of protein in your diet through the food or by adding
rice protein powder to your juices.
i. Walk briskly for at least for 30-45 minutes every day.

Some Personal Transforming Experience


When I first began working with my Ayurveda clients, I weighed around 180
pounds or 85 kilograms. My stomach had become heavy and I felt ‘fluffy’. My
toxins or Aama and fat were increasing day by day.

How did I feel? Horrible! I felt lazy and had no energy or enthusiasm. The
best way to put it was that I felt dull. If anyone disagreed with me or spoke
against me, I would get agitated and angry. Whenever anything didn’t go
my way, my response was nervousness, depression or anxiety. Whenever I
ate, I felt very sleepy, lackluster and dull. As time passed, I became a
habitually lazy person, meaning that if I had something pressing to do, I
would say to myself, “Oh, I will go do it tomorrow.” This procrastination
became a huge burden on me.

My life was a mess! I was having problems with all my relationships – my


family, friends, relatives and business associates – all because of my dull
mood and heaviness. People were not very friendly to me and every part of
my life was in trouble. On the physical level, I was completely dull, lethargic
and heavy. Mentally there was lot of confusion, lack of clarity, confusion and
doubt. On the emotional level, I felt depressed, sometimes anxious and very
nervous. It was a horrible situation.

No matter what I did, I just kept gaining more weight. Nothing was working.
If I fasted, when I began to eat food again, I would crave it and sweet
cravings were always there. It was a vicious circle. If I lost a few kilograms,
than when I resumed eating, I would regain a few and soon weigh more than
before. I was in a vicious cycle and couldn’t get out of it.

Ultimately, I turned to the systematic treatment of Ayurveda for an


answer. This program consisted of herbal supplements, specific diet,
lifestyle guidelines, some Marma Chikitsa (subtle energy points on
the body), a bit of panchakarma (deep cleansing treatment) and
some mantras.

So, what did I do? First of all, I went on Mung Bean Soup. Whenever I was
hungry, I would eat this Mung Soup and Mung Beans. For ten days, I ate
only this. In those 10 days, I lost around 15 pounds or 6 kilograms, which
was very good.

Magically and suddenly my Agni (digestive fire) increased, my Aama started


reducing and my VATA (element of air) started to get rebalanced. At night, I
would take CASTOR OIL with 1 pinch of Ginger powder. I began to take all
my Ayushakti herbal preparations like: Look Slim, Mednil, Aampaachak,
Amrutras, Anulom, Virechan and sometimes Suniram.

After the first 10 days, I added some vegetables to my Mung Soup. So,
now I had Mung whenever I was hungry, with vegetables. These were
cooked in cow’s ghee, asafoetida, cumin powder and wild celery seed.
This I did for the next 20 days.

After 30 days – 10 days only on Mung and then 20 days on vegetables and
Mung, I added fruits to my diet. Believe it or not within 3½ months, I had
lost around 20 kilograms or around 55 pounds. Plus I had begun to do some
exercises known as baithak– sit-ups, moving up and down, and some
dunds— that I have shown you in many of my workshops. I also began
walking more. All these exercises helped me reduce my tummy and also
increased my muscles and energy.

I began to feel 180-degree difference in my physical energy and in the way I


looked. I felt 20 years younger. In the past, I had often thought, “I feel like
I’m 60 or 70 – and it’s time for me to retire from everything.” After this
great program, I again had natural enthusiasm, my body was flexible, my
anger had disappeared and the agitation had disappeared. I no longer felt
depressed and my anxiety was much less. I began to take life as it came and
became more flexible. My VATA went down and so did my Aama. I found
these Ayurveda therapies to be truly something amazing!

Also, the number of my clients started increasing. They all began feeling the
difference in my energy and began to tell me, “Dr. Naram, what’s
happening? You are looking wonderful, amazing and so much younger!”

One of my clients was a woman named Malti Trivedi. She weighed around
was around 280 pounds or 130 kilograms. She came to me with lots of
health problems. Her legs were like the legs of an elephant. She was not able
to sit down, get up or walk. Her joints and whole body were aching. Because
she was so overweight, she had problems with her hips and her life was a
real mess. Twice she had gone for obesity surgery, she had tried several
Anti – Fat diets and basically done everything possible on this planet.

She was a very wealthy woman so she would travel to America, stay there
for some natural therapy, detox program and some colonics. With her
money, she tried buying everything possible, but despite all her efforts, she
could not buy good health. Ultimately she weighed 280 pounds and her life
was a real mess. So, when she saw me, Malti said: “ Why don’t you try all
your secrets with me?”

So instead of just 10 days, I kept her on Mung Soup for 15 days. After that,
she had Mung Soup with vegetables for 25 days. Whenever she was hungry,
she could eat Mung Soup and vegetables. If she wanted, she could have
some 1 or 2 cups of tea or coffee. And then again she went on another 25
days of Mung Soup, vegetables and fruits.

To our surprise, everything broke and the weight began falling off her.
Today, I met her after 20 years and she weighs around 130 pounds or 75
kilograms. She has not gained weight after losing the original 150 pounds.

Her life is amazing. She was actually retired, but now she is helping her
husband in his business. And very importantly, she is doing some social
work – helping me with one of my philanthropic activities we do in India –
helping mentally retarded children. I have known her for the last 20 years
and something amazing has happened.

In these last 20 years, I must have helped more than 30, 000 people
decrease their weight, to look slim and younger and feel and look great.

This program is really very simple but amazing and powerful. It’s a simple
formula of diet, lifestyle, some exercises, some marma, some mantras and
some herbs. Again, the herbs are: Look Slim, Mednil, Amrutras,
Anulom, and sometimes I give Aampachak, if there is lot of Aama. If
there is pain or joint pain, we also give people: Sandhiyog or Rasnadi
Guggul. With this combination we have helped more than 30, 000 people
to reduce their weight. Now, if you see me, believe it or not, I look like I am
35 years young. I feel like I am 25, but actually, I am 50 years plus.

Consistency Creates Magic


There was a rock that lay in a mountain every year during monsoon for 6
months. A spring of water fell on that rock from at least 30 ft. high. The rock was
always proud that nothing could beat it and nothing could break it.

Over five years of water falling on the rock, a well was slowly created in the rock.
But this hole was not created overnight. In fact, no one saw a little depression in
the rock within a month of waterfall. Only when the water was falling
continuously, and tirelessly, could it penetrate through such a hard rock and
create a hole.

Fighting your fat is like penetrating a rock in your life. Any crash course diet may
reduce your fat temporary but it will come back as soon as you start eating. The
only way you can create a permanent transformation in your life is by doing
consistent effort to boost your metabolism and burn excess fat.

Consistency and continuous planned actions can create magic in reducing your

Of Losing Your Fat
Increasing AGNI & Metabolism
In order to remain aware and focused even after your meals, it is necessary to
stimulate your AGNI, or digestive fire. Otherwise all your body’s energy goes into
digesting the meal you have just eaten and you feel drowsy. A strong digestive
fire serves you very well when you are striving to become thinner. It helps your
body to metabolize the food you eat most effectively and converts it in a balanced
way to the tissues throughout your body.
INCREASE YOUR AGNI
Drink a cup of hot ginger water after every meal.
This will make your digestive fire blaze very high.
REDUCE & BRING VATA BACK
TO ITS NORMAL PATH
When the element of Air or VATA goes upward in the body through subtle
energy channels, rather than where it should go (downwards), your body can
become bloated and swell with excess air. Many people who seem to be
overweight actually have a pronounced VATA problem in their body. Therefore,
in Ayurveda, we work with amazing simple kitchen ingredients to help reduce
and balance VATA so any bloating and swelling in the body gets reduced and the
VATA is redirected to its proper place and way of moving.

Home Remedy to Balance VATA


Cumin Powder 1 TSP.
Ginger powder ½ tsp.
Black pepper ¼ tsp
Cardamon ½ tsp.
Asafoetida 1 pinch
Water 1 cup
Honey 1 tsp.
Boil all the above ingredients except honey and filter
Add one teaspoon of honey
Drink this mixture warm twice (2x) a day

• It will help to remove swelling in your body

• This combination also removes blockages of Aam (toxins) & the Doshas
(elements of air, water and earth in the body)

Physical Activity Makes a Long Term Difference
Aerobic & Non-aerobic Activity
Exercise is a key component to losing weight and looking thinner over the long
term. You can choose either aerobic or non-aerobic exercise. The difference?
Exercising aerobically means training with air or oxygen. It involves a moderate
pace, and the goal is to increase your endurance gradually, and to work within
your target heart rate range, but not to fatigue your muscles. Aerobic activity does
not involve short spurts of energy. Instead, it is typically a long, moderately paced
activity. If you gasp for air, chances are you are probably working non-
aerobically, or without a sufficient oxygen supply to the muscles. Examples of
non-aerobic types of activities are sprinting, football, weight lifting, and
other "stop and start" types of exercises. The following list contains aerobic
activities:
Types of Aerobic Activity
• Walking • Cross-country skiing
• Jogging • Hiking
• Swimming • Aerobic or "step" classes
• Bicycling • Kickboxing

Why Aerobic Activity is Important


For Health and Weight Loss:

1. After 20-30 minutes of sustained aerobic activity, your body begins to burn
the fat you have stored for energy
2. It strengthens your heart & reduces blood pressure
3. Maintains a continued increase in metabolism even several hours afterwards
4. Improves your athletic endurance
5. Releases “feel good” hormones like endorphins and can reduce depression
and improve overall psyche

How much should you do?


Remember that if you do not exercise regularly, start out at the low end of these
numbers and gradually increase the time and number of days you spend
exercising. To develop aerobic fitness, you must work out for a minimum of 20 to
60 minutes, three to five days a week. Choose an activity you enjoy that uses your
large muscle groups, such as your thighs and buttocks.

Strength-Training
What it is: Strength-training, also known as resistance training, is an
anaerobic activity that is quite different from an aerobic activity. With aerobic
activity, your goal is to keep a moderated pace and increase your athletic
endurance. With this anaerobic activity, your goal is to cause fatigue to your
muscles with harder but shorter bursts of energy in order to cause a continual
increase in muscle mass and muscle strength. Strength-training involves
overloading or placing a stress (through weights or resistance) on the muscle
until it can no longer lift the resistance using proper form. The muscle eventually
adapts to greater levels of stress, and you must continually increase the amount
of resistance you use when a strength-training workout is no longer difficult.

Why Strength -Training is Important


For Health and Weight Loss:

1. Muscle strength enhances most athletic activities, such as running,


cycling, climbing, swimming and team sports.
2. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn everyday, even at
rest.
3. Reduces risk of osteoporosis.
4. Helps you look lean and toned.
(Note to women: You will not get huge like a man from lifting weights
unless you take steroids or testosterone. You don't have the hormones in
your body that cause such changes, but you will get toned and look lean.)

How Much Should You Do?


The American College of Sports Medicine recommends strength-training two to
three days a week. Work up to two to three sets of 8 to 12 repetitions for each
major muscle group, depending on your level of fitness and age. Of course, to get
started, it’s essential to work with a trainer at your gym or a personal trainer to
get a program that’s right for you!

Diet plays a very important part in the science of Ayurveda. We often say
that the stomach is the gateway for health or illness. Specific diets are
recommended to keep up optimum health.

All-important is to keep AGNI, the digestive fire, very strong. When it
blazes high, we digest our food well and the nutrients are absorbed into our
tissues in a balanced way. However, when we eat too much food and too much
AAMA-producing (toxins) food, our metabolism gets clogged and various
problems begin. Too many KAPHA producing foods can increase fat. Too
much VATA producing food will bloat the body with gas like a balloon and
create cravings for food along with emotional conditions like depression, fear,
low self-esteem, stressful mind and others.

Read the list of beneficial foods below and follow these guidelines if you want
to lose fat and look thinner. It will provide a basic guideline for you. If you
follow these eating tips in combination with the home remedies, exercise, marma
and herbal remedies we have spoken about in this book let, you will definitely
make progress in reaching your goal of a thinner and healthier body!

illustrated below balances the Ayurveda element of VATA or the Air
Element. Keeping VATA in balance benefits emotions, as well as the
body and mind.

Sit quietly and take a few deep breaths. If you do this marma exercise
regularly for 15-45 minutes, placing your fingers together as pictured in
the diagram, combined with the diet, home remedies and herbs given
above, you will have potent results.

Mantra
A mantra is a combination of syllables in the Sanskrit language whose
sound is capable of deeply affecting the body, mind and emotions.
Mantras work with the super conscious power and bring deep tranquility
and change. The mantra we suggest using for obesity is:

Direction : North
Day : Any day
Recitation : 7 Malas
Mala : Tulsi or by hand
Asan : Cotton
Dress : Yellow
It’s best to repeat this mantra facing north if possible, while sitting on
cotton fabric & wearing yellow clothing. You may repeat it 108 times
aloud. If you have a prayer bracelet, or mala, you could move the mala
through your fingers to help you count the repetitions. You may do this
practice any day of the week.
