Bevel Gears
1. Explain terminology of bevel gear.
2. What is formative number of teeth in bevel gear? Derive
the expression for formative number of teeth in bevel gears.
3. A pair of straight bevel gears mounted on shafts, which are
intersecting at right angle, consists of 24 teeth pinion
meshing with 32 teeth gear. The pinion shaft is connected
to 7.5 kW, 1000 r.p.m electric motor. The starting torque of
the motor is 1.25% of the rated torque. The load
distribution factor is 1.2. The gear is to be made of gray
cast iron FG 350, while the pinon is to be made of case
hardened steel 40C8 (𝑠𝑢𝑡 =580 N/𝑚𝑚2 ). The gears are to be
manufactured by generation. The tooth system is 20° full-
depth involute.
i. If the factor of safety required against bending failure is
3.0, design the gear pair by using the velocity factor.
ii. If the factor of safety required against pitting failure is
2.0, specify the surface hardness required on gears. Use
the following relations:
Assignments
𝑌 ′ =0.484-(2.87/𝑧 ′ ), 𝐹𝑤 = (0.75*𝑑𝑝 *b*𝑄′ *K)/cos𝛾𝑝 Newton
K=0.18(𝐵𝐻𝑁/100)2 N/𝑚𝑚2

4. A straight bevel pinion having 18 teeth is to mesh with a

straight bevel gear having 40 teeth. The axes of the pinion
and gear intersect at right angles. The pinion and gear are to
be made of a case hardened steel having ultimate tensile
strengths of 720 N/𝑚𝑚2 and 580 N/𝑚𝑚2 respectively. The
gear pair is to manufactured by generation. The pinion shaft
is connected to 15 kW, 1440 r.p.m electric motor. The
staring torque of the motor is approximately twice the rated
torque. If the surface hardness of the gear pair is to be 350
BHN. Design a gear pair with factor of safety of 1.5.
Assume velocity factor accounts for the dynamic load. Use
the following equations:
𝑌 ′ =0.484-(2.87/𝑧 ′ ), 𝐹𝑤 = (0.75*𝑑𝑝 *b*𝑄′ *K)/cos𝛾𝑝 Newton

K=0.16(𝐵𝐻𝑁/100)2 N/𝑚𝑚2

5. A straight bevel pinion having 21 teeth to be made of alloy

steel 15 Ni2cr1MO15 (𝑠𝑢𝑡 =800 N/𝑚𝑚2 ) is to mesh with
bevel gear to be made of plain carbon steel 55C8 (𝑠𝑢𝑡 =720
N/𝑚𝑚2 ). The axes of the pinion and gear intersect at right
angles. The gear pair is required to transmit 13 kW power
from a spindle running at 500 r.p.m. to a machine running
at 300 r.p.m. The starting torque of the motor is 110% of
the rated torque. The factor of safety required is 2. The

tooth system is 20° full-depth involute. The gears are to be
cut to meet the specifications of grade 6. The pinion and
gear are to be case hardened to 400 BHN and 350 BHN
respectively. The deformation factor C for gear pair is
10900e, N/mm. Design the gear pair. Use the
Buckingham’s equation for dynamic load. Use the
following relations:
𝑌 ′ =0.484-(2.87/𝑧 ′ ), 𝐹𝑤 = (0.75*𝑑𝑝 *b*𝑄′ *K)/cos𝛾𝑝 Newton

K=0.16(𝐵𝐻𝑁/100)2 N/𝑚𝑚2 , 𝑟𝑚 =( 2 − ) mm

For grade 6, e= 8+0.63(m+0.25√𝑟𝑚 ) 𝜇m
