Assignment RCD Columns

The document contains the solutions to several problems involving the design and analysis of reinforced concrete columns. Problem 5.20 involves calculating the ultimate load capacity of a rectangular column reinforced with six 25mm bars. Problems 5.21 and 5.22 involve designing a square tied column to support given loads using 2% and 5% steel ratios respectively. Problem 5.23 calculates the capacity of a round spiral column. Problems 5.24 and 5.25 involve designing round spiral columns to support loads using 2% and 5% steel ratios. Problem 5.27 involves designing a square tied column to support axial and shear loads using 2% steel ratio.

Problem 5.20

Calculate the ultimate axial load capacity of a rectangular column 350mm x 450mm reinforced
with six 25mm bars. Use fy = 345 MPa and f’c = 28 MPa.

Answers: 2001 NSCP; øP = 2,629 kN

2010 NSCP; øP = 2,441 kN

Problem 5.21

Design a square tied column to support an axial dead load of 900 kN and an axial live load of 1240
kN. Use fy = 414 MPa and f’c = 27.6 MPa. Assume 2% steel ratio and use 28mm main bars and 10 mm ties.

Answers: 2001 NSCP; t = 440 kN; Ast = 3870 mm2

2010 NSCP; t = 435 kN; Ast = 3785 mm2

Problem 5.22

Repeat PROBLEM 5.21 using 5% steel ratio.

Answers: 2001 NSCP; t = 375 kN; Ast = 7030 mm2

2010 NSCP; t = 370 kN; Ast = 6845 mm2

Problem 5.23

Calculate the ultimate axial load capacity of a 480 mm round spiral column reinforced with six
22mm bars. Use fy = 345 MPa and f’c = 34 MPa.

Problem 5.24

Design a round spiral column to support an axial dead load of 950 kN and an axial live load of 1210
kN. Use fy = 414 MPa and f’c = 21 MPa. Assume 2% steel ratio and use 28mm main bars and 10 mm spiral.
Use 30 mm steel cover.

Answers: 2001 NSCP; D = 512 kN; Ast = 4120 mm2

2010 NSCP; D = 490 kN; Ast = 3770 mm2

Problem 5.25

Repeat PROBLEM 5.24 using 5% steel ratio. 25 mm longitudinal bars, and 12 mm spiral.

Answers: 2001 NSCP; D = 425 kN; Ast = 7095 mm2

Problem 5.27

Design a square tied column to carry the following loads:

Axial Loads: Shear parallel to one side:
Dead Load = 1100 kN Dead Load = 120 kN
Live Load = 700 kN Live Load = 110 kN

Concrete strength f’c = 21 MPa. Use 25-mm-diameter longitudinal bars (fy = 415 MPa) and 12-mm-
diameter ties (fyb = 275 MPa). Clear protective covering is 35 mm. Use 2% steel ratio. Use 2001 NSCP.

Answer: 435 mm x 435 mm; eight 25-mm-bars, 142 mm tie spacing

Problem 5.22

Repeat PROBLEM 5.27 using 2010 NSCP.

Answer: 435 mm x 435 mm; eight 25-mm-bars, 124 mm tie spacing
