1 Classroom Learning Profile

The students in the classroom were culturally American but some spoke Spanish to each other occasionally. Most students were Hispanic and from low-income families. The classroom focused on morality, humility, and citizenship but did not discuss spirituality. Many students struggled with attention, memory, and hyperactivity. Most classwork involved rote learning and mastery of content rather than higher-order thinking. No significant disabilities were observed among the students.

Classroom Learning Profile based on observations and data

Use readings and EDUC 202 self-reflection assignments from the past to describe your placement class:
Nieto & Bode; Understanding Culture Brief; Hoeksema; Pearson 202 custom textbook; Barringer, Pohlman, & Robinson

Culturally the students were very American, there was not a lot of signs of cultural behavior or ideas
within the classroom. However, it was often difficult to determine the cultural aspect of the classroom
Culture due to the young age of the students. There seems to be a cultural influence from their parents,
however, it is not shown within the student’s actions or behavior. The dominant language is English as
well however, there were few incidences where the students used Spanish to communicate with each
other, yet it is very rare to see it.

Within 24 students in the classroom, the majority of the students were racially Hispanic with few
students that were white or black. Ethnically many students were from Mexico with few white and
Race & Ethnicity
black students

The students were often from low-income families where the student was often neglected by their
Social Systems- parents, due to the parent’s jobs – the parents work during the nights till to morning. The students had
Peers & Family a great friendship with each other with great support from their teacher.

Because the school is a public school, there was not any mention of spirituality or faith development
within the classroom. Even within the classroom there have not been students showing signs or
Moral, Spiritual, and communicating that they attend a religious service. Yet, there was a lot of focus on humility and
Faith Development morality which is shown through the school pledge. The focus on morality was to ensure the students
to have a positive attitude towards each other to raise the students as good citizens and people.

Many of the students do not have a strong aptitude within the area of attention or memory. For
instance, the student often will blurt out the answers of the question before raising their hands – the
teacher has continuously empathized on raising their hand without blurting out the answers. Moreover,
the student is easily distracted by various thing such as the weather, substitute teacher, snacks etc.
Attention & Memory
While the student does show focus when the teacher catches their attention, even then the length of
their focus does not last long.

Most of the language used in the classroom is English; however, there have been few times that the
student had a conversation by using Spanish with their peers. Interestingly while most of the student
Language
are Hispanic, it is rare to see the students use Spanish.

Most of the students are quite active, some student is more than other into a point of distraction. There
is a certain student who cannot have a learning position – sitting properly – for more than a minute.
With the exception of the student’s hyperactiveness, the students have great Motor &
Motor &
Spatial/Sequential Ordering skills. The student is very active in the playground and does well in
Spatial/Sequential
activities that require the students’ movement.
Ordering
Most of the student’s activities are focused on rote learning thus, there was not a lot of higher order
thinking in the classroom. Most of the activities are a repetition of the content covered by the teacher.
Higher Order Thinking Thus, the focus is more on mastery than creativity.

With the exception of the language barrier, there is not a significant disability within the classroom.
The student can process the task that is required for them.
