Question Paper

The document discusses two questions related to chemical processes. [1] For the first question, the owner of a natural gas complex wishes to add formaldehyde production. The summary suggests producing synthesis gas from natural gas, then using the synthesis gas to produce formaldehyde and estimates production capacities. [2] The second question is about a proposed oil refinery. It discusses a scheme for producing lubricating oil from reduced crude oil with a block flow diagram. It also discusses properties of crude oil and manufacturing of chloromethanes.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KHARAGPUR

Date: l9/2/20l4 AN Time·: .2 Hrs. Full Marks:.6~:: Dept.: Chemical Enginee'ring

No. of students: 87 Mid-Spring Semester Examination: 2013-2014
Sub. No.: CH30014 Subject name: Chemical Process Technology
3rd Year BTech(H) and Dual Degree (87 CH students).
Instructions: (1) Closed Book. Closed Notes. (2) ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
(3) Clearly mention and then assume any' missing information I data

Q 1. Owner of a natural gas based petrochemical complex wishes to add formaldehyde as a

new product. He has a stream of 10,000 nm 3/hr of natural gas (CH4 96%v/v~ C2H6
3.8%v/v, rest C02, CO and N 2) available for this.

Suggest the process route to the owner via synthesis gas.

(a) Provide a block flow diagram and a description for the overall scheme. Detail the
technology for production of synthetic gas and other intermediates, if any, with
appropriate process flow diagrams and brief technical descriptions for each.

(b) Estimate the production capacity of the synthesis gas, other intermediate products (if
any) and the finished product formaldehyde (in the form of37% w/w HCHO solution
in water). You may assume the industry standard values of reactor conversion per
pass and overall yield percentage for each of the processes you include. [8]

(c) What are the pollutants in the liquid effluent from each of these processes and what
treatment you propose for these streams? [6]

Clearly mention all assumptions you make with logic for the same.

Q2.(a) A proposed refinery for processing Middle East crude oil needs to produce lubricating
oil base stocks along with fuel products. The feed to the lube oil base stock
manufacturing section is reduced crude oil (RCO) from the crude distillation unit (CDU).
Suggest a processing schetne for this lubricating oil manufacturing section of the refinery
with a block flow diagram (BFD). Justify each process I plant you include in your
.... scheme. -[8] .u·!•·

(b) What is petroleum crude oil? What are the typical impurities associated with petroleum
crude oil? Discuss the main differences in quality between Indian crude oil and crude oil
imported from the Middle East countries. [1+2+5=8]'"

(c) What are the end uses of the different chloromethanes? Briefly describe how these are
manufactured by thermal chlorination of natunl,l gas along with a process flow diagram?
