Lesson Plan Oct

The document provides a lesson plan for teaching 9th grade algebra students about parallel and perpendicular lines. The lesson objectives are for students to be able to write equations of parallel and perpendicular lines when given a point and another line. The lesson activities include identifying horizontal and vertical lines, completing foldables relating parallel and perpendicular lines to coordinate points, practicing example problems as a class, and independent practice and assessment. Accommodations are provided for English language learners and special needs students, including visual aids, guided practice, and checking for understanding.

Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

By: Alejandra Lugo

Subject/ Grade Level: Unit Topic: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Algebra 1/ 9th
Date: October 22, 2018 Estimated time: 85 mins
TEKS objective:
A.2(E) write the equation of a line that contains a given point and is parallel to a
given line
A.2(F) write the equation of a line that contains a given point and is
perpendicular to a given line
A.2(G) write an equation of a line that is parallel or perpendicular to the x- or y-
axis and determine whether the slope of the line is zero or undefined
Lesson Goal(s):

Students will be able to write equations of parallel and perpendicular lines when a point and a
line are given

Learning Objective(s):

We will graph horizontal and vertical lines, then write an equation of lines parallel and
perpendicular to the original lines when given a point.

I will be able to create parallel and perpendicular equations from a point and a linear equation.

Academic Language:
• Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
• Horizontal and Vertical Lines
• Slope

ISN
“HOY/VUX” Foldable (Pintrest)
“Horizontal and Vertical Lines” Foldable (Pintrest)
Worksheet (created by mentor)

Instructional Delivery - Activities

1. Warm Up
a. Identifying zero and undefined slopes from an equation

2. Start on “HOY/VUX” foldable where they make the connection of undefined lines
being vertical lines and being written as x = # as well as zero slope lines being
horizontal with the equation looking like y = #.
3. Practice as a class with second foldable and began relating the parallel and
perpendicular lines with one coordinate point.
4. Give them about 10 minutes to paste this in their ISN.
5. Start with the steps to follow when trying to come up with equations of perpendicular
and parallel lines when given a point and another equation.
6. Work on extra questions independently (Assessment)
Closing: Check a couple of the questions from their independent practice.

Accommodations/Modifications/Enrichment

Special needs learners

• Visuals
• Guided practice: we always practice at least one problem together, then they try on their
own
• Checking for understanding: Ask the students to repeat the directions and question them
throughout the lesson

English Language Learners

• Using cognates and giving them an extra page with key words in English and Spanish
• Modeling and visuals (Foldable)
• Partner practice
