Design Project On Multi-Story Building Design Using Reinforced Concrete

The document provides a design problem statement for a 3-story commercial building with reinforced concrete. Students are asked to: 1) Provide reinforcement details for main beams and slabs at the first floor. 2) Design secondary beams and slab at the second floor. 3) Design the column at the ground floor. 4) Design the footing. 5) Verify designs of structural elements performed in software against manual calculations.

Design Project on Multi-Story Building Design using Reinforced Concrete

Course: CE F311 (Design of Concrete Structures

Group#1

Statement of Design Problem:

Design a G+2 Story commercial building with floor plan shown in the Figure 1. Please note
that ground floor is directly supported on ground. Secondary floor beams are so arranged that they
act as simply supported beams and that maximum number of main beams get flanged beam effect. The
main beams rest centrally on columns to avoid local eccentricity. For all structural elements, M25 grade
concrete will be used. However, higher M30 grade concrete is used for central columns up to plinth, in
ground floor and in the first floor. Sizes of all columns in upper floors are kept the same; however, for
columns up to plinth, sizes are increased. The floor diaphragms are assumed to be rigid. Walls of 230
mm thick with 12 mm plaster on both sides are considered. For simplicity in analysis, no balconies are
used in the building. You may use the softwares SAP 2000 or STADPRO. In the Report provide the
followings:

(1) Reinforcement details of main beams and slabs at the first floor.

(2) Design details of secondary beams and slab at second floor.

(3) Design details of the column at the ground floor

(4) Design detail of footing.

(5) Verify the design of any column, main beam, secondary beam, and a slab performed by software
with that of manual design.
