Lab 3 Grip Strength Lab
Lab 3 Grip Strength Lab
Semester : I - 2018/2019
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
INTRODUCTION
Grip strength is the ability to maintain a consistent amount of force using all of the
fingers of the hand. In daily life, various amounts of grip strength are required for different type
of products. The grip strength applied would also be dependent of the design of the product itself,
and the way the product is being gripped. Hand grip strength is an important limiting factor in
many occupational tasks as well as in general activity. Grip strength is affected by many factors.
Some of these are tasks related including grip span requirements, grip surface geometry and
friction hand orientation movement of the hand during the grip effort, task repetition, and the use
of gloves. Other factors relate to individual subject or worker strength characteristics as affected
by age, gender, hand size and muscular strength acquired over time through occupational,
domestic, and recreational activity. As is true for any type of strength, hand grip strength is
highly individualistic.
This experiment is designed to give a practical experience to students in measuring grip strength
The collected data is analyzed using statistical analysis method such as minimum, maximum, and
average. The sample of experiment is students of respective class and the experiment is carried
out in the Ergonomic Laboratory, FKP.

THEORY
The hand grip dynamometer is a tool used to measure static grip strength of the hand and
the forearm muscles.
LIST OF EQUIPMENT
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
You are required to measure the grip strength of the students in your class. Perform the
grip strength measurements in different wrist positions (ulnar, radial, extension, flexion). Discuss
the importance and significance of your data and relate that to the design of hand tools, i.e. what
is the meaning of this grip strength data and how does that affect hand tool design? Why do the
data behave in that manner? (e.g. what is the meaning of x,y,z etc) How does grip strength relate
to upper limb musculoskeletal disorders?
